Aside from the details of record, rain dance = spilling blood. John wants to take the gun and go take care of that tramp Phobe (aka 'Fifi'), his girlfriend who wants to have Don's baby... ('bundle', not 'bun, Don'). This song is about treachery and loss. John is asking his buddy (the singer) for moral support.

"Lost in the harbour "seems to be a metaphor for a peaceful place that is not longer able to be found. An apt description of Gaza and Ukraine in 2025.

i have it on pretty good authority, as told by a neighbor and schoolmate of Hardin's at South Eugene HS, that the song was written following some time he spent at his Uncle's farm. They had sheep among other animals and H's dad remarked something about Tim being the black sheep of the family which caused him later to start in on the song. "envied hair" apparently refers to a wig his older cousin had that some guy on the street once offered her money for. "see the shine" -- H. had a sebaceous gland problem Hardin had earlier...

"envied hair" apparently refers to a wig his older cousin had that some guy on the street once offered her money for. "see the shine" -- H. had a sebaceous gland problem Hardin had earlier in his life which caused his skin to appear oily & wet. He contrasts this to "pretty girls w. faces fair" . Anyway it's a great song especially the melody and chords i think.

This song is about me - a person who comforts his best friend who lost her husband, She seeks solace, which he provides. He has a crush on her. Fueled with wine, she pours her heart out. They reach a level of intimacy, cudling togehter, which comforts her, but arouses him. He will not speak out his true feelings, but savour the oppotunity the moment provides. His love for her never confessed, her trust in him never abused.

Ok, I like good grammer too, but context is important as well. This song, and album for that matter, are centered in another, simpler time, when proper grammer was not prioritized, or accessible, or necessary, and marriages were most likely for convenience or necessity. Remember "marriaged" in another song on this album, not a word. The artist's Midlake (Tim Smith) that penned this poetry was not in the least interested in our 21st century approval of the narrator/character's abilities or decisions to use proper or improper grammer. The lack of proper is an important hue of the big picture actually....

Yet another beautiful song with open interpretations that all seem to find the same point in the end, hopelessly trapped by unchangeable circumstances, and longing for that change without end. Come on Tim, "head home" and jump back into Midlake. I miss that level of artistry, so great.

Bar Room Queen does not refer to a gay man in this song. smh.

The band says “’Cellophane’ is about realizing you’re not as tough as you thought. That maybe you mentally don’t have what it takes, but at the same time are afraid of getting the help you need.”
