I can kinda see it being taken as an Iraq metaphor, but I take the song as being more about apocalyptic fantasies in general, and how empty they are. Each generation thinks it's the last hurrah, this is the end of the world. But then it doesn't end, and so we keep dragging ourselves along, while waiting for the next big sign to come along and promise the end. In that sense, I read the references to sores, scars and the light integrated in your mind as references to nuclear war, the flash of the bomb, the scars and sores of the aftermath, and the industry as the military industrial energy that might take us there someday, and that shares such apocalyptic views with us.

When I was listening to this in the car, I noticed that on the side of the road, a house had been razed to the ground, leaving only charred wood and broken bits of roofing. I took this in right as the singer exclaimed, "Who are we/To promise we'll be leaving shortly?" This actually changed the meaning of the song completely for me--imagining a family standing in front of their destroyed home, burned down in an electrical fire ("what was that light", etc.) by accident ("what have you done"), and, as they stare, they feel that their life is over, and try to remember the past ("smile, go inside")--but they still have to make it somehow. "Who are we to promise we'll be leaving shortly?"
I do get a whole apocalyptic, end of the world feeling from this. Like who are we as humans to decide there is no hope, and our lives will be over anytime soon? And we as humans keep siking ourselves out, we always think it's the end, we are always preparing for the end, we can't just believe in a better future.

I just want to comment on the title of the song, "Well Thought out Twinkles". I'm in a cooperative collective, and at our weekly operational meetings, when we agree with someone we do this thing called giving a "twinkle" or "twinkling" in which we silently waggle our fingers if we agree with something. It's supposed to save time and help in keeping people from talking out of turn. but yeah we "Twinkle" stuff all the time. so that's what i thought of when i saw the title of this song.
I have no real idea what this song's about, but I love it anyway. Here's one idea: SSPU is something of a throwback/revival of late80s early90s alt rock, and they're also fairly anti-commercial. In that setting, you could interpret the second verse as 'revisiting' the music 'industry' of that time, and no they won't necessarily be leaving it soon. Well that's what I hope it means because I need to hear more of this music from this band.

...this is the central idea of the song to me, it's the central theme of the band too--revisiting the past and denying the modern mainstream music industry. the flaw is really something to be cherished because it's natural and it's human, but we're constantly trying to progress and rid everything of flaws, even ourselves with plastic surgery and all. this is a testament to not having to be perfect and holding onto that not-so-perfectness that makes us who we are.
mega, that's beautiful. i think you caught the essence of what a unique band like this really is, which is to not only take the song and interpret it to what you think it means, but i really think most of the bands' lyrics were written with the hope that people will take any instance they can find in their personal life, or at least something they feel strongly about, and apply the song to it as closely as possible. brian aubert has said that the name silversun pickups is a state of mind. he didn't go into it any further, because i think he wants people to come up with their own idea of what a silversun pickup is. of course, then again he's explained different, far more bizarre meanings behind the name, so i could totally be wrong on this, and thus making my theory of their songs hold MUCH less water.
