The Bird and the Worm Lyrics

He wears his heart safety-pinned to his backpack
His backpack is all that he knows
Shot down by strangers
whose glances can cripple the heart
and devour the soul

All alone he turns to stone
While holding his breath half to death
Terrified of what’s inside
To save his life
He crawls like a worm from a bird

(all alone) Crawls like a worm from a bird

Out of his mind the way pushes him, whispering
Must have been out of his mind
Midday delusions of pushing this out of his head
Make him out of his mind (out of his mind)

All alone he turns to stone
While holding his breath half to death
Terrified of what’s inside
To save his life
He crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm from a bird

(all alone) Crawls like worm from a bird (x2)
(all alone) crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm from a bird

All he knows
If he can’t relieve it, it grows
And so it goes
He crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm from a bird

Out of his mind the way pushes him, whispering
Must have been out of his mind

All alone he turns to stone
While holding his breath half to death
Terrified of what’s inside
To save his life
He crawls like a worm from a bird

All alone he’s holding his breath half to death
Terrified to save his life
He crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm from a bird

(all alone) Crawls like worm from a bird (x2)
(all alone) crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm from a bird

Actually you're all completely wrong. It's about a parnoid Schizophrenic. The video put's you in his shoes of what it's like. Like after the first Verse and after the chorus you can hear whispering saying "Just keep walking" and when he looks through the peephole theres a monster thing. It's an hallucination like the auditory ones.

Yeah, this sounds about right.

@oreo123 fun fact the paranoid schizophrenic in question is Bert McCrackens brother

i think its about a kid who evry one hates him cause he speaks his mind{he wears his heart safty pinned to his backpack} as in wearing his heart on his sleeve. but hes scared of wht he really fells{Terrified of whats inside} and people talk about him behind his back, it makes him fell like hes crazy or their somthing wrong with him {Out of his mind the way pushes him, whispering Must have been out of his mind} he fells he'll aways be rejected so when he starts to fell deeply from someone he runs away{To save his life He crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm from a bird}so he wont hurt

My Interpretation

@sadieRawwr that usually means he's emotional if you wear your heart on your sleeve, not necessarily meaning you spoke your mind.

i think its about a kid with a mental thing because it says terrified of whats inside and he could know that theres something wrong with him and it scares the hell out of him, and by shot down by strangers whos glances can cripple kind of hints to me at paranoia that everyone knows and that theyre out to get him so he feels utterly alone. and by all he know is he cant relieve it it grows i think it means he has to do something so whats wrong with him wont overwhelm him completly.

The more I listen to it, the more I feel it is about domestic violence from the abusee's point of view. "The Stranger's looks" could possibly be the public seeing the abusee's bruises and marks. He hangs on to his backpack as a focus of escape (his heart). When he sings about someone being "out of their mind" and "terrified of what's inside" it may be of the abuser and how he never knows what to expect from him/her. "To save his life, he Crawls like a worm" reminds me of escaping to dark place, like a closet. "All alone," in the closet, "He turns to stone," holds as still as possible, "holding his breath half to death," trying not to breathe to not be found. When he arives at home, the abuser remind him he is all alone (the deep, terrifying voice in the background).

i think u may be on to something, but i kinda disagree but no one but the writer knows right, i request u look at my intepertation

This song totally reminds me of the BTK serial killer.

He wears his heart safety-pinned to his backpack His backpack is all that he knows Shot down by strangers whose glances can cripple the heart and devour the soul

^ he felt like he was all alone, people would give him dirty looks, and he couldnt trust anyone, he was extremley lonley for most of his life, keeping only to himself

All alone he turns to stone While holding his breath half to death

^well, this would be when hes actually commiting his murders, he turned to stone, like, he was solid. because for once, he felt strong, in power, like, he was better than anyone else. and of course he was holding his breathe because he was scared he was going to get caught. it also could be sexual, in relation to him, because he used to hang himself till he could harldy breathe and that was one of the biggest turn on's for him. so that would make sense.

Terrified of what's inside To save his life He crawls like a worm from a bird (all alone) Crawls like a worm from a bird

^he was very scared of what was inside of him, he had no clue why he felt the need to kill, and to save his life, he ran away. from everyone in his life. and then from the people after he killed them

Out of his mind the way pushes him, whispering Must have been out of his mind Midday delusions of pushing this out of his head Make him out of his mind (out of his mind)

^he used to have fantasies of killing people, thinking only of how great it would be, he knew he shouldnt be doing this though, he knew he was crazy. pushing this out of his mind could be actually commiting his murders, instead of just thinking about them, because he was crazy with want for them

(all alone) Crawls like worm from a bird (x2) (all alone) crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm from a bird

^ he was all alone in the world, trying to get away from everything

All he knows If he cant relieve it, it grows And so it goes He crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm from a bird

^after he commiuted a murder, he would think about it, and he would be fine for a while, but he knew that the thought of his one murder wouldnt last, as in if "he cant relive it, it grows" he knew his need to kill would "grow", which is why he commited as many as he did.

i guess it could be used for any serial killer though, hmm but whatever, who knows? maybe im just crazy! (:

He wears his heart safety-pinned to his backpack His backpack is all that he knows Shot down by strangers whose glances can cripple the heart and devour the soul

About this guy, probably mentally ill (hallucinations, most likely). Everyone around him seems like strangers, and monsters or something like that. This gets him emo, and so mainly, he pins all his hope on his "backpack", which is probably his remaining stuff, as he leaves home or something.

All alone he turns to stone While holding his breath half to death Terrified of whats inside To save his life He crawls like a worm from a bird

He is really scared of those demons that his mind keeps creating, and tries to run, in vain.

Out of his mind the way pushes him, whispering Must have been out of his mind Midday delusions of pushing this out of his head Make him out of his mind (out of his mind)

he knows he is crazy, but that knowledge makes him even more crazy.

there. ^^

I have to disagree about the song meaning with the general populous. While it may have to do with high school type scenario's, I believe it may be speaking of persons who are afraid of what they want to do to those who mis-treat them.

I like to think that most people (high school students included) have an innate trend to know right from wrong. Now, if you think of this song as one who hates the way he is treated (let's be honest, even though people know right from wrong, they can still be A**holes) and wants to get his vengeance.

Take a look at this segment:

"Out of his mind the way pushes him, whispering Must have been out of his mind Midday delusions of pushing this out of his head Make him out of his mind (out of his mind)"

Delusions making him go insane? Imagine if you had such a moral constitution to not harm someone, yet you desperately wanted to exact revenge on those who caused you agony.

So... What if he snaps? It would go against everything he stood for. Which is why he may be "terrified of what's inside". Since it's a mental battle, he's "all alone" in his struggle. Ergo, his mental battle of right and wrong may be him crawling from the bird like the worm.

Song Meaning

Gosh PLEASE dont compare the Used to Panic At The Disco, just come on, the used is the used gosh fuck heads

"He wears his heart Safety pinned to his backpack His backpack is all that he knows Shot down by strangers Whose glances can cripple The heart and devour the soul"

Hes a kid who's nice to everyone, even tho hes treated bad, being nice to people is all that he knows how to do; was taught was the right thing to do.. His backpack is his ego, and is shut down by bullies, who makes him feel shitty about, and hate himself.

"All alone he turns to stone While holding his breath half to death Terrified of whats inside To save his life he crawls Like a worm from a bird Crawls like a worm from a bird"

hes trying to act like "stone" acting as if the ridicule doesn't effect him, and trying to slide away from it.

"Out of his mind away Pushes him whispering Must have been out of his mind Mid-day delusions of pushing this out of his head Maybe out of his mind"

hes trying to make it seem like its just all in his head hes being bullied

"All alone he turns to stone While holding his breath half to death Terrified of whats inside To save his life he Crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm from a bird Crawls like a worm from a bird Crawls like a worm from a bird Crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm from a bird"

"All he knows If he can't relieve it it grows And so it goes He crawls like a worm Crawls like a worm from the bird"

it just keeps getting worse

"Out of his mind away Pushes him whispering Must have been out of his mind

All alone he turns to stone While holding his breath half to death Terrified of whats inside To save his life He crawls like a worm from a bird All alone he Holding his breath half to death Terrified to save his life He crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm Crawls like a worm from a bird Crawls like a worm from a bird Crawls like a worm from a bird Crawls like a worm from a bird Crawls like a worm, crawls like a worm Crawls like a worm from a bird"

I could relate to this song so much

he goes insane.
