The Go-Betweens – Cattle And Cane Lyrics 18 years ago
Fantastic lyrics, crappy monotone tune. Put it to a decent tune & it would be an all-time great.

The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony Lyrics 18 years ago
Bono called this the best song of all time at the Make Poverty History thing in London. Don't know about that, but it IS very good. A happy song. Britpop, but less frivolous than Oasis and Blur. Reminds me of my first year at Uni.

Guns N' Roses – November Rain Lyrics 18 years ago
The most beautiful song EVER! I love to just lie down & dreamily listen to it. I never get sick of it. I want the first half of it at my wedding.

As much as I try to like their songs out of loyalty to Brisbane (theirs & my home town), this is the only one of their songs I have ever really liked.

It is about Brisbane & always makes me think of Brisbane in the 80s - a fun place for me because it was the "big smoke" where I went on holidays & also reminds me of the the female Lord Mayor back then who always seemed very glamourous to me . I think it was the theme song to a daily/weekly show about Brisbane on TV too. the stuff about being full of battered wives was a bit rough, but then its always been cool for The Go-Betweens and other Bris-bands of that era to shit on Brissy. I happen to love the place tho.

The Choirboys – run to paradise Lyrics 18 years ago
My FAVOURITE song of all time! Such a great, happy, typical Aussie pub rock song. My best mate & I both love it & always crank it. "you don't want anyone" - who cares if some bitch has dumped you. You can have a good time just with your mates anyway.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Disarm Lyrics 18 years ago
Reminds me of a girl that I hated at school. We were sworn enemies, then I got to know her & ended up falling in love with her. "disarm you with a smile".

Pearl Jam – Better Man Lyrics 18 years ago
Always seemed to me to be about the girls I knew in high school who went out with Jocks who treated them like crap & never took any notice of me.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Today Lyrics 18 years ago
Never knew it was meant to be ironic at the time it came out. Played it the day I got my learners' permit (to drive) in 1995. I could sympathise with the guy in the ice-cream van working & on his on while everywhere everyone else was getting it on with someone.

The year I was born! It came out when I was in my last year of High School & just seemed to fit so well with being an angst-ridden teenager wanting to break free. Felt like it was written just for me.

John Mellencamp – Cherry Bomb Lyrics 18 years ago
I remember hearing a story from a forestry worker in the small town where my grandparents lived how in his younger & wilder days he’d copped a beating from some other guys he knew & that he was being a pain in the arse & probably deserved it. – “Me & my big mouth. Some guys had to put me in my place. when I see those guys these days, we just laugh & say ‘do you remember when?’”

When I heard this song, it was almost as if he had written it!

John Mellencamp – Rain On The Scarecrow Lyrics 18 years ago
I found the CD single to this in a throw-out bin about 3 years after it came out.

I used to dance around my room with it pumped both when I was at school & Uni. Always used to play it before a night out when I just turned 18 & was at college.

I knew a lot of people at school whose parents were losing their farms due to drought when I first heard this song in the 90s.

Though our family farm was sold, not lost, it still was very like our family. Dad, his father & grandfather all grew up on the property, but sadly I couldn’t enjoy my childhood there, as much as I desperately wanted to. Troy, QLD Australia.

John Mellencamp – I Need A Lover Lyrics 18 years ago
In Yr 11 I went out with this chick who went beserk when we broke up & succeeded in losing me most of my friends. What friends I did have left used to joke that this song was about me - I need a lover who won't drive me crazy.

John Mellencamp – Hurts So Good Lyrics 18 years ago
It's not about kinky sex, you sickos.

It's how when you're a teenager & you're all messed up & unhappy & getting with a girl is good even though there is the hurt when you realise it was just a one-nighter or you know that eventually you will break up.

Feels so good to hurt so bad” as Elton John said in “Sad Songs”

John Mellencamp – Jack and Diane Lyrics 18 years ago
always reminds me of a girl I liked when I was 16 who told me it was her favourite song. Also rebellion against the authorities when you are a teenager. “let the Bible belt come & save my soul” also resonated with me – the stuffy conservativeness of the provincial town I lived in where everyone seemed to be a Christian fundamentalist & also the Lutherans at my school preaching it but being hypocrites. Later found out that Mellencamp was brought up Lutheran, which explained a lot about why I "get" his songs.

John Mellencamp – Again Tonight Lyrics 18 years ago
I used to play this every afternoon after school while I jumped on the trampoline to get rid of all my anger for the day. Used to imagine myself in this country hall near my grandparents' farm dancing till the sweat poured off me with some nice country girl who knew how to have a good time, instead of just standing there and being too cool to dance like most of the girls at the school socials I went to in the city.
