Sweetest Goodbye Lyrics

Where you are seems to be
As far as an eternity
Outstretched arms open hearts
And if it never ends then when do we start?
I’ll never leave you behind
Or treat you unkind
I know you understand
And with a tear in my eye
Give me the sweetest goodbye
That I ever did receive

Pushing forward and arching back
Bring me closer to heart attack
Say goodbye and just fly away
When you comeback
I have some things to say

How does it feel to know you never have to be alone
When you get home
There must be someplace here that only you and I could go
So I can show you how I…

Dream away everyday
Try so hard to disregard
The rhythm of the rain that drops
And coincides with the beating of my heart

I’ll never leave you behind
Or treat you unkind
I know you understand
And with a tear in my eye
Give me the sweetest goodbye
That I ever did receive

Pushing forward and arching back
Bring me closer to heart attack
Say goodbye and just fly away
When you comeback
I have some things to say

How does it feel to know you never have to be alone
When you get home
There must be someplace here that only you and I could go
So I can show you how I feel

One line that could be interpreted as 'goodbye sex' doesn't sell me.

I think the song is more about a girl whom the speaker loves, but runs in to a barrier with her. She either isn't interested enough, or has personal reasons keeping her from saying OK. He is saying that he will always love her, no matter what she does, or where she goes, and with who, although he seems to feel some regret that he can't shake the feeling. ("How does it feel to know you never have to be alone / When you get home") He says it almost sarcastically. He tries to lie to himself while she's gone; that he doesn't feel this way. ("Dream away everyday / Try so hard to disregard / The rhythm of the rain that drops / And coincides with the beating of my heart")

To address the lines "Pushing forward and arching back / Bring me closer to heart attack": I think, taking the whole stanza in to account, that she is pushing him to move on while he is reluctant to go, and angry that she wants him to. She is pushing him forward from behind, and he is leaning back, arching his back trying to get some leverage to resist. He's panicking (the heart attack) and then finally, he says "Say goodbye and just fly away / When you come back / I have some things to say" so that he won't have to move on because he won't obstruct her next move at all. He makes an effort to give her a clear conscience.

I hate to disagree with ya but I definitely think its about goodbye sex. Theres more than one line that shows that. What about the line "there must be some place near that only you and I can go/ so i can show you how i feel". Sex is the ultimate experience between two people that love eachother. He wants one more time before she leaves to share that. You say "She is pushing him forward from behind, and he is leaning back, arching his back trying to get some leverage to resist." but she is the one leaving. And...

I agree with you about 99% yet there are a few things I've interpreted differently.

I agree that this song is about someone he loves and there is a barrier. I've actually just come to this same barrier in my relationship. She has an ex whom she thought she was over, but turns out she wasn't. There were no hard feelings between the two of us, I let her go because I knew that she wasn't ready and it's better to be honest with yourself than to deny it.

Therefore "How does it feel to know you'll never have to be...

I gotta say that joker and austin cleared up a lot of this for me. I never really bought into the whole goodbye sex thing. A lot of people think the whole album is about sex sex sex but its not. Yes sum of the songs are about sex but u can't interpret all the songs that have words u don't quite understand to be about sex. I do agree that its about a struggle between lovers and I can relate to this becuz I also had sum of the same problems with my ex.

At one of their concerts he said that it's about long distance relationships and how it's so hard being away from eachother, but in some ways it's better, because when you finally do see eachother, every single minute of it is the best thing in the world.

This song is about an affair...

"Where you are seems to be /As far as an eternity /Outstretched arms open hearts /And if it never ends then when do we start?" This part describes how lonely it feels to know you love someone who belongs to someone else.. the doubts of wondering if you will ever get to really be together..

"I’ll never leave you behind /Or treat you unkind /I know you understand /And with a tear in my eye /Give me the sweetest goodbye /That I ever did receive" .. This expresses an undying love.. but at the same time, knowing that they can not continue like this.. I think that basically, it's gotten to be too much for him.. He's saying he loves her, and would never hurt her.. but he can't keep waiting around for her..

"Pushing forward and arching back /Bring me closer to heart attack /Say goodbye and just fly away /When you come back / I have some things to say" This part is key to understanding what it's like.. it's got a double meaning.. it describes lovemaking, but also the inability to stay away.... the heart attack is the intense emotions.. also the allusion to flying and her return.. the saying "When you love someone, let them go, if they come back to you, they are yours.." .. he might let her go, but she will be back.. their love is too real.

"How does it feel to know you never have to be alone /When you get home /There must be someplace here that only you and I could go /So I can show you how I… " This describes an affair so well.. He is thinking of her with the other person.. it is a very lonely feeling.. and also.. the desperation of wanting to know that what the two of you have is special.. it is different and better than what she has with her other person... there must be some place that is only ours that i don't have to share with anybody else..

"Dream away everyday /Try so hard to disregard /The rhythm of the rain that drops /And coincides with the beating of my heart" Dreaming of a future maybe.. trying to ignore the sadness (raindrops).. but feeling it with each heartbeat. I think that he is basically telling her he loves her and always will.. but she must go and decide what she wants... and he knows that the love they have is real enough that someday, she will be back...

i totally agree with you!

I agree with cockandbull. I used to think this song was about breakup sex, but having gone through some things lately, I have a different interpretation of this song.

I have two initial interpretations: It's either that 1) the singer likes a girl but she's with someone else, or 2) they like each other but she's in a relationship. I would initially think it's #1, but my hunch is that it's #2 because "outstretched arms, open heartS" meaning that they both like each other. However, she's in a relationship and they can't do anything about that. She's "as far as an eternity" from him due to this since he can't have her. But they still like and care about each other, keeping the other person close and playing these games. The singer realizes "if it never ends, then when do we start?" Because nothing will ever start between the two of them unless those games end.

The singer knows this and, against what he wants to do, has to say goodbye to her. It's just not right to play these games because it's hurting himself by dragging him along when he knows he can't have her now. Ordinarily he would never leave her behind or ditch her because he loves her, but he has to say goodbye to her. And he knows that she understands that him leaving isn't because he doesn't care. It's because he has to.

The "pushing forward and arching back" part is that war within himself. He knows what he has to do so he pushes himself to say goodbye to them. But then he arches back against that push because he truly doesn't want to. He knows he has to stop their friendship and the games, but this sadly means not having her around. He's battling with himself to say goodbye.

The "how does it feel to know you'll never have to be alone when you get home" part is because it's so easy for her right now. She's the one in the relationship, she's not alone. Meanwhile, he has to "dream away every day, try so hard to disregard the rhythm of the rain that drops and coincides with the beating of my heart." He's the one who has to deal with the pain of their goodbye, while she has someone to go home to. The singer shows his bitterness towards her relationship in this part.

And in the end, he wishes there was someplace that the two of them "could go to" so he could be truthful to his feelings and show her how he feels. By saying goodbye, he's ignoring his feelings. But he wishes there was some way he could just let those feelings come back and show her how much he cares. But he can't because she's with someone else. He wishes there was a place they could go where they could be happy together.

Interesting. Four girls. Don't get me wrong, very good song. Loving Maroon 5. But still, a bit odd no?

"Don't cry for me. I'm already dead."

I adore this song, and I must say it took me so long before I realized it was all about goodbye sex (like hannah said). I mean, seiously- "Pushing forward and arching back"? What else is he supposed to be doing, waving goodbye? I am a bit slow.

It's stil lan amazing song with a great beat.
