24 Lyrics

Been given 24 hours
to tie up loose ends
to make amends
His eyes said it all
I started to fall
and the silence deafened
Head spinning round
no time to sit down
just wanted to
run and run and run
Be careful they say
don’t wish life away,
now I’ve one day

And I can’t believe
How I’ve been wasting my time

In 24 hours they’ll be
laying flowers
on my life, it’s over tonight
I’m not messing no I
need your blessing
and your promise to live free
please do it for me

Is there a heaven a hell
and will I come back
who can tell
Now I can see
what matters to me
it’s as clear as crystal
The places I’ve been
the people I’ve seen
plans that I made
start to fade
The sun’s setting gold
thought I would grow old,
it wasn’t to be

And I can’t believe
How I’ve been wasting my time

In 18 hours they’ll be
laying flowers
on my life, it’s over tonight
I’m not messing no I
need your blessing
and your promise to live free
please do it for me

In 13 hours they’ll be
laying flowers
on my life, it’s over tonight
I’m not messing no I
need your blessing
and your promise to live free
Please do it for me

I’m not alone, I sense it, I sense it
All that I said, I meant it, I meant it

And I can’t believe
How much I’ve wasted my time

In just 8 hours they’ll be
laying flowers
on my life, it’s over tonight
I’m not messing no I
need your blessing
and your promise to live free
please do it for me

In just 1 hour they’ll be
laying flowers
on my life, it’s over tonight
I’m not messing no I
need your blessing
and your promise to live free
please do it for me

No, I'm pretty certain that this isn't about suicide or a bad relationship. Someone said it was inspiring and I think that to be true.

I believe this is about people who, plain and simple, want to die. The artist begs you to hold on and BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. Wishing to die just may come true and you will only then really realize that when it's too late (24 hours, in this case). You realize that you still have plans to carry out, people to talk to, things to do and see. You realize that you have a FUTURE.

The message is to pull yourself out of whatever sludge that got you to the point of longing for death and CARRY ON with life. Fufill your dreams, your hopes, your plans. We are only given so much time on this God-forsaken planet and some people less than others for various reasons (war, murder, accidents..). In all actuality, you go to bed each night not knowing if you will live through tomorrow. Wasting such precious little time will get you no where.

While agree this is a "Live Life to it's Fullest" song, I can't embrace the idea it's about people who want to die. People who want to die don't see themselves growing old. Here's how I see it going down:

"Been given 24 hours to tie up loose ends to make amends" - Maybe this person was diagnosed with a terminal condition...

"His eyes said it all, I started to fall, and the silence deafened, Head spinning round" - This is the initial reaction to the very bad news...

"no time to sit down, just wanted to, run and run and run" - whatever it is, this person can't get away from the, ahem, deadline.

"Be careful they say, don’t wish life away" - Here the person reminds us what 'they' say: life is short

"now I’ve one day" - and now this person knows life is too short

"Is there a heaven a hell, and will I come back, who can tell" - I think this person is telling us religion doesn't mean anything to them

"Now I can see, what matters to me, it’s as clear as crystal, The places I’ve been, the people I’ve seen" - Life's experiences are what is important to this person now.

"plans that I made, start to fade, The sun’s setting gold, thought I would grow old, it wasn’t to be" - I would say this person feels like they have been 'living in the future.' Everything they hoped/planned for, is now gone.

for me, it's a break-up song. she's madly in love with someone but he(she) ends up breaking her heart and rejecting her love. if you've ever been in love before and then utterly dumped (while YOU are still in love)- it feels like... well.. like you're dying. you've been in a relationship for a few months, a yr, a few yrs - giving it your all and then it ends: "And I can’t believe How I’ve been wasting my time " <-- it's like her thinking: i should've never started this in the first place

amen :)

I think this song might be about somone planning their own suicide. She's set herself a deadline to do it, and she's counting down the hours to her own life.

"I'm not messing" is her saying that she isn't kidding around about it this time, and that she's actually going through with it.

"I can't believe how I've been wasting my time" means that she doesn't understand what the point is of her living any more. She's given up hope.

"I need your blessing and your promise to live free" is kind of her suicide note, saying "It's not your fault... please don't blame yourself."

i don't really think it's about a relationship or somethin like that... i think it's really just about someone who found out he/she is going to die

it's a very deep song, ain't it?

This is an amazing song. After I heard it I thought and thought about it constantly for over a month. No joke. Every moment I had where I wasn't working or doing something my mind wondered back to that. It was crazy because never had I had a song effect me like that.

I see this song as a hypothetical question: What if you found out you had 24 hours to live?

I think it someone realizing how short and unfulfilled their life has been and now that they have a time limit (24 hours) they must make the most of it. At first they are talking about going through the psychological aspect of the severity of this situation (*first verse + bridge). I think they told their lover ("I'm not messing") are breaking up with them ("promise to live free") and just to be there with them to the end. I believe the second verse is the person talking with the (now ex) lover. Questioning God, thinking about everyone they have ever known, how they will never live a normal life.

After some time has passed I believe the person begins to think about everything they have said and had no regrets about it because they believe that they could possibly be the only person to ever be in this situation.

I also believe the countdown is while all this is going on the person checking the time and is like, "Ok, I have 18 hours, 13 hours, ect left"

Thats my take on this. Am I right? who knows

I think she's about to die, and there's a guy who really loves her ["His eyes said it all"]. She probably thinks she didn't live her life to the fullest, and she wants the guy to move on after she dies because she wants him to be happy.

I see it in parallel with the programme 24, as she said she actually wrote it becuase she's obsessed with it. Now the guy, "His eyes said it all, I started to fall, and the silence deafened, Head spinning round" to me is Jack, its almost like her mission, it ends in 24 hours and she goes with it. "laying flowers on my life" is like putting flowers on your coffin. "I’m not messing no I need your blessing and your promise to live free Please do it for me" Is almost like ehr suicide, she knows shes gone and she wants him (dunno why i see a him) to live on and not feel its his fault. A wicked song and one of the best on the album
