? I love this song. Shame no one else does. I remember when Iw as in Austria, I made my dad play "fold your hands child.." (my favourite album), and this song came up, and the instrumental, chamber music part came up, and we were curving right down the hill, and the music fit the moment perfectly. I also like the fast talking.."you slept better in a sleeping train in a shed in a station with a torch and a Women's Realm to keep you company tonight.."
This is still my favourite B&S song! So there are others who like it too. I heard it late at night on CBC Radio 2 in Canada, then bought my first B&S album the next day... great song.

My personale take on this song is that it's actually about a woman who killed herself. The storytelling about the woman's life is actually quite interesting and I love the line it follows. Basically, the male singer and the woman were highschool sweethearts. Eventually, they had to part ways and leave each other. Obviously the woman had a lot of problems and one thing led to another and she ended up committing suicide ("Deny yourself the benefits of being alive"), which really broke the man's heart. The song takes place when the singer comes back to their hometown and is visiting the woman's grave. And then the woman appears as kind of a ghost and sings with him, which would be the part sang by the female singer. The boy and the girl the female singer is tallking about are actually both singers!! Maybe this doesn't make sense at all, but it does in my head

i really think about interpretations on b&s songs cause in a lot of them you can notice that there's something behind but in women's realm i don't see like there's A Meaning behind it. ps i think the part where isobel? sings it would be better if sang by stuart. i know it's like an other person talking but idk i always think when stuart's not singing is such a waste
I think it is a conversation between a boy and a girl who may be family. Maybe he is her father and he is telling the girl, his daughter, that he was a bad father and asking why things went wrong for her and then she replies that she doesn't know what happened with her friend with whom he was maybe having an affair, hidden from the mother. But in the end the boy regrets it and tells her that he is going to fix it.

I believe the song is about a man and a woman talking about another girl that used to live in that town. The boy has come back to the town and remembers the mysterious girl while the other woman who sings wants him to forget about her. In the end he assumes that the girl is lost, and can only survive by herself without having to take care of anyone, like she did with her father.

I think that this song is a proposal made by a guy to his friend. Both grew up in the same town and were best friends and everything went normal during their childhood, but suddenly, they became teenagers and realized the problems they had in their own houses. The girl, who used to be a great person, started a phase in which she was dominated by her boozer father and wasn’t able to study or even hang out with her friend, so the boy started dating a girl- the one that is crying on the other side of the river and the one that the girl ask for, who started dating another guy at the end of summer. She is crying because she was in love with someone else and was hard to tell the boy-. When they became adults and the boy and his new girlfriend broke up, the boy proposed her friend to scape from that town, where she had to live in horrible places to avoid her father, and beggin a new life.
