Make You Feel My Love Lyrics

When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer a warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When evening shatters and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you haven't made your mind up yet
But I would never do you wrong
I've known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong

I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling down the avenue
And oh, there's nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging on the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing like me yet

I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love

Its obviously a great love song, wonderful description of a higher love. It sounds too unbelievable or amazing to be Bob's love or human love, more like the love of God:
A love that won't give up. A love that is faithful. A love that is patient. No matter how much a person refuses it, this kind of love understands.

This isn't really a correction, but a begging for an answer to a question. I've heard two different versions of this song and it's driving me crazy. It comes down to "Evening shadows..." or "Evening shatters...". On his homepage, it says 'shadows' BUT he's been known to change lyrics after writing a song. Tangled Up In Blue has many versions. Joan Osborne sings "shatters" and Adele sings "shadows" - If you listen to the version on his album "Dylan", I'm 95% sure he says 'shatters'. You can find both all over the web. Anyone else seen this or know?? The meaning to me is a gorgeous love song to someone who's been in a lot of pain, but he loves her like crazy anyway or because of it?? He's there for her.

Lyric Correction

good spot re shatters! I think you're right.

Not Valid

It's NOT shadows, it's SHATTERS. I don't give a crap what the "official" Bob Dylan website says. People need to start using their grey matter.

Dylan used the lyrics "evening shatters" as a form of imagery, as if the evening sky was made of opaque glass. When you "shatter" the "evening" glass, it falls into the horizon and night-time (i.e. "the stars") appears as if it were a backdrop. Those who think it's "shadows" must be completely unable to mentally visualize such things..

Think about it. When the evening shadows AND the stars appear? How does that make ANY SENSE, at all? When's the last time you saw a naturally lit shadow OF ANYTHING, and stars in the sky AT THE SAME TIME???

Those of you who feel me, be stubborn about this one. I am with you. Don't let the crap that artists like Adele have been putting out in recent years set any kind of precedent. Time and retrospection will reward us all with victory..

I think this song is really dedicated to one of his children. Perhaps one that may have a hard time feeling how much he loves them. I gave a copy of the lyrics to this song to my son I was trying to say how much I loved him and always would. He is gone now died at 29 but he knew When the rain is blowing in your face And the whole world is on your case I could offer you a warm embrace To make you feel my love

is it just me or does the whole song sound sinister, a bit like a threat!! he says he'd go crawling - down the avenue - surely a reference to picking up a prostitute "to make you feel my love". I don't know i think it's more than a simple love song, to me there's definitely an undercurrent of, maybe not obsession, but something like it.

I was surprised to discover that Dylan wrote this because it's so utterly lacking in cynicism. This is the other end of the world from It Ain't Me Babe. To me it sounds like a lullaby which makes me wonder if it's more about the love of a parent for a child than the love between lovers.

"I could never do you wrong, I knew it from the moment that we met" makes me visualize that moment when a newborn is first handed to a parent and they feel the weight of the love and responsibility they've taken on. For that baby they "go hungry they'd go black and blue" and then as that child faces challenges and the "storms of change" they'd give anything to help their child navigate along to safety. They want their child to be happy and see "their dreams come true" and they'd do anything for them.

The parent- child relationship (instead of a relationship with Jesus) could account for the unconditional sacrificial love described because parents tend to describe their love for their children in this way and children struggle to understand the way their parents love them sometimes.

My Interpretation

@Sylvied maybe the song was written such that the singer of the song was intended to be Jesus (or God) singing to the listener.
