Major Tom (Peter Schilling cover) Lyrics
the ship is waiting.
All systems are go.
"Are you sure?"
Control is not convinced,
but the computer
has the evidence.
No need to abort.
The countdown starts.
the crew is certain.
Nothing left to chance,
all is working.
Trying to relax
up in the capsule
"Send me up a drink."
jokes Major Tom.
The count goes on...
Earth below us
drifting, falling.
Floating weightless
calling, calling home...
We're now in orbit.
Stabilizers up,
runnning perfect.
Starting to collect
requested data.
"What will it affect
when all is done?"
thinks Major Tom.
there is a problem.
"Go to rockets full."
Not responding.
"Hello Major Tom.
Are you receiving?
Turn the thrusters on.
We're standing by."
There's no reply.
Earth below us
drifting, falling.
Floating weightless
calling, calling home...
a final message:
"Give my wife my love."
Then nothing more.
the world is mourning.
They don't realize
he's alive.
No one understands,
but Major Tom sees.
"Now the light commands
this is my home,
I'm coming home."
drifting, falling.
Floating weightless
coming home...
Standing there alone,
the ship is waiting.
All systems are go.
"Are you sure?"
Control is not convinced,
but the computer
has the evidence.
No need to abort.

After my 12th repeat I decided to look the lyrics up. I must say I was blown away.
Major Tom seems to be trying to find his place in life, and he is willing to abandon his way of life to do so. He wasn't completely honest with those around him, but he was selfish, he wanted to find his purpose. The setting of space symbolizes how lonely this mission is, finding his place.
I think this is relates to everyone. The younger generation is still searching for their purpose, figuring out what they want to do with their life. Older generations may have realized they made a mistake when determining this, they may want to change it. They might also just question it, wonder what else they could have done.
A few translations from the original german song didn't translate into the song. Liem's input on the translation: "Hello Major Tom. Are you receiving? Turn the thrusters on. We're standing by." the german version goes "Hello Major Tom, can you hear us? Do you really want to destroy this project?" which strongly implies that he decided to throw the mission. The ending is also slightly different, with Major Tom musing that a "light is leading me through space, I'm coming soon ... I'm starting to feel cold".
I must say I'm fascinated by your in-depth interpretation of this song, though I'm not sure exactly where you got some of your theories. All the same, it puts an interesting spin on the lyrics and gives them much more meaning than they have at face value.

BTW, this is coming from someone who only heard/understood the "earth below us, drifting falling" part before coming across the entire song. I seriously thought it was another metaphorical song about sex.

I first heard this song on the new Lincoln MKZ (or whatever it was) commercial, and I just had to look it up. I love it, and I love the way it's sung. Awesome song.
I agree with LP Reanimator. I could tell on the commercial that it was The Shiny Toy Guns playing.

I too heard this song in the Lincoln commercial. It seems that the lyrics are doubled here though, at least from the version I've heard. Awesome song though

this song reminds of the movie 2001:space odessey i love that book i love that movie I LOVE THIS SONG the shiny toy guns are great
It's funny you say that because Major Tom is said to be a fictional character created by David Bowie when he wrote "space oddity" after watching 2001: Space Odyssey... It was originally supposed to be a parody, but look up how many people who have taken off with the idea... search Major Tom in lyrics... It's amazing!

Fantastic song giving us a very sad story. The original was done in German by Peter Schilling in 1982.

sooo, is this about the words disinigration?

This song from the Linclon commercial really caught my attention because the voice sounds so Annifreid (sp) Lingstaad from Abba. If you heard any of her albums both English and Dutch, this song is a dead ringer for her style and her voice. so when I read originnaly it was written in German, made sense to me. Please tell me when this song was written. Sounds so 80's strange I had never heard this song before now.
