I have no idea if this meaning is unintentional, but Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night' has a character called Antonio who is a pirate in love with a man named Sebastian. My first impression of the song was that it was a sort of prologue to the play. The music video's set on a stage as well which kind of backs it up.
That's funny. I assumed it was Sebastian due to Saint Sebastian, who has been a somewhat homo-erotic icon in art since the Renaissance. He's almost always portrayed nearly nude, with a classical male physique, and being pierced by arrows (the symbolism is pretty obvious).

that was exactly what i thought as soon as i first heard it! antonio is my favourite character, so the song really hit home hard. and personally i think the song matches up with his self-sacrificial love for sebastian, and his adoration for him <3

My take of this song. There are two gay pirates on a ship. They have to hide their affection, but the crew finds out. They torture, torment, and abuse the one man and use the other as a way to get him to agree to their means. The man does all he can to keep Sebastian safe, and eventually the Captain finds out. He forces them to walk to walk the plank.
Or that may just be a storyline:P Figured I'd share.

Personally I think this song applies to any group peer pressure situation and it talks about perserverence. Take, for example, high school. Many people get teased throughout high school for their sexuality or any number of reasons and I think this song has just put it into the context of pirates. It urges someone to stay true to what they believe in or what they want because although others may persecute for you, this person or thing brings you joy and that is the most important thing in life. Eventually there will be an end to the torture or pressure and until that time you need to stay true to yourself and life will throw obstacles at you but your job is to think of your love and passion and persevere through the torment.
I think, although it is seemingly shallow, quite a lot can be read into this song.
I love this song a lot. For me it says the difficulties of being out in our society these days. Although we say we're accepting of it, it still can be bad. It really happens that people are beaten and threatened just because of who they love. I find this song portrays the message but to put it on a bit of a lighter tone with pirates. In the beginning, it's like saying that it's miserable but the only reason you wish to stay around is because of who you love. Next is saying that you get beaten, attacked, threatened and have your things destroyed. Just because of being who you are. It does happen. Look around. Don't be blind to it. And nobody will stop it since they also don't approve or are scared of being beaten with you. Then its people making you miserable, hurt or publicly humiliated. the reason you do it is to protect the one you love. "I'd be under the sea, but you hold me above" means that you can't take it but the one your with is what keeps you happy (at times). the part of being thrown overboard, not quite sure about. Possibly that more people know so it's harder on you? At the end when they come back (in the video) it's like everyone thought they were defeated but then they overcame the judgements and began to strive again. the part of "We deserve much better than we've had" is saying that we're still human too, even if we just have different tastes in relationships than you do. Even if we're not attracted to who society says we should be. That we don't deserve the pain and suffering. That's basically the Pirate to Modern translation for everyone. That does still exist today. Hiding who you are so that nobody treats you differently.
