Here's To Now

Great song about existential thinking. I am guessing the point of the lyricist here would be to state that life is all about living in the now, not the past or thinking about the future. She/he further trys to demonstrate and back this up by stating apricot seeds carry arsenic that we dont worry about because we eat the apricot in the moment its our instinct to live in the now. However, the madness of sickciety teaches us to lose our instincts. The past and the future is an illusion, hanging on to it and worrying about the future is useless and causes us to lose our instincts --- to live in the moment is what matters and gives life meaning. Pride is really the egos construct to try and own reality to control the universe. When really if you let it go you see nature in its infinite nothingness and beauty you become one with the moment!

I think that's only half of the story. To me this song seems to be about the dichotomy of living in the now vs. planning for the future.

On the one hand, when people live for the future they build up cities that and systems of living that separate them from their basic nature, so that's a vote for living in the now. Apricots and apples are delicious, so despite the potential poisons in them, eat up. That's another vote for the now.

On the other hand, living in the now can really screw up stuff later. There are poisons in the fruits that we've been too shortsighted to fully understand. Our cities and infrastructure have been built in a way that doesn't really consider the future implications of the damage they've done to the planet. Eventually there might not even be a "now" to toast.

So these cities are messed up because they've been built with an ignorance of the now, but they're also messed up because they've been built with an ignorance of the future...so what's the right path? Is there one?

I'm sitting on your porch chick. Eff your plans lets hang out. We're all getting old and losing it and sagging everywhere. And we're all ingesting poison anyway. And the busy boy is freaking loud.

I think he is in the moment and he's just talking, and he's so content with himself. I also like the line about how once you grow up you maybe become a little more reasonable and you can control your instincts? As the people get aged and their bellies get sagged well their instincts all fall out. Old people are calmer than the rest of us.

I'm pretty sure that Isaac is satirizing the "here's to know" mentality and showing the destructive nature of that train of thought. The not noticing of the poisons in the fruits, Eden reference?, could be taken to show that pollution is killing the environment and that we just ingest the chemicals anyways. The song does come on a documentary about the environment after all
