Elephant Lyrics

Bet he feels like an elephant
Shaking his big grey trunk for the hell of it
You know that you're dreaming about being loved by him
Too bad your chances are slim

And it’s not like Mr. Shock
To get shy when I ask who is on top?
There must be something deep down in the middle down there
He’s not too easily scared

He’s got friends but they got fear
Wouldn't care too much if he just disappeared
Oh, look, see there he is now coming down the stairs
(Here he comes)

He pulled the mirrors off his Cadillac (yeah)
‘Cause he doesn’t like it looking like he looks back
He talks like his opinion is a simple fact
Somebody grabbed his collar
He cried the whole way home
He won’t remember a thing 'til it starts again
That’s how it is 'til the end (yeah)

It's a song about someone with a big ego - someone who feels as big and strong and important as an elephant. Someone without humility.

In our age, that also may mean someone with lots of money, hence the references to Cadillac and collar.

Funny enough, after the lyrics "he is now coming down the stairs", you can hear a noisy, "fat" descending sound (at 1:07 and again at 2:42), sounding like a theme from Money, by Pink Floyd (a song with lyrics related to these).

I love the way they use distorted, clumsy sounds to represent musically that kind of character. That's synesthesia.

go synaesthetes! ;)

After listening to the rest of Lonerism, one would know that the album is about the loneliness of the writer. This song, however, is sharp contrast to that theme. In Elephant, he describes a man who "You know you're dreaming about being loved by".

This man is very outgoing, loved by some, and envied by about everybody else. And he is described by the lyric of the year in my opinion, "He pulled the mirrors off his Cadillac/'Cause he doesn't like it looking like he looks back". But this enviable man is simply not real.

This man is who we all aspire to be. The man of which we all love and love to hate at the same time. We all share the common desire to please fellow human beings. And this song is about the man who lives the dream to do such a thing. We all wish we had the money to afford to rip mirrors off a Cadillac and be described in this way. A loner isn't a person who lives like this, but he does dream like it which is how I have formed my opinion of the song. Overall, awesome song and album!!

'Bet' he 'feels like' an elephant ... He’s got friends but they got the feeling Wouldn't care too much if he just disappeared ... Somebody grabbed his collar He cried the whole way home

Making fun of people who think the whole world revolves around them, but no matter how much they posture, no one cares about them, and they aren't really all that powerful.

He won’t remember a thing 'til it starts again That’s how it is 'til the end (yeah)

But he never learns his lesson, he's blind to all else except his own image of himself.

agree it is about someone with a big ego , but at the same time its saying by being such a big head you just generate resentment and alienation onto yourself.. The 'elephant' need everything they say to be treated as gospel but at the same time there is a desperation to this craving. Its basically song about your boss - even though they are a total cock and probably won't change they are proably far more lonely and wretched than you are!

The bit where it says "he pulled the mirrors off his Cadillac cause he doesn't like it looking like he looks back" sounds similar to the lyrics of arctic monkeys 'the blond-o-sonic shimmer trap' , where it says "and she snapped wing mirrors off a Cadillac, a particularly pretty one, and it meant that she never had to strain her back when she was putting her lippy on"
They sound quite similar and have similar meanings of a person with a large ego

I'm sure it's going to be revelatory when the official lyrics are shown, as I found multiple places that all had different lyrics. Whether a few different words or phrases to entirely different stanzas, it was all varied. So I won't submit my own interpretations or guesses, but before the full album arrives in October 2012 I'm interested in the final report.
