In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Behold a new Christ
Behold the same old horde
Gather at the altering
New beginning, new word
And the word was death
And the word was without light
The new beatitude
"Good luck, you're on your own"
Blessed are the fornicates
May we bend down to be their whores
Blessed are the rich
May we labor, deliver them more
Blessed are the envious
Bless the slothful, the wrathful, the vain
Blessed are the gluttonous
May they feast us to famine and war
What of the pious, the pure of heart, the peaceful?
What of the meek, the mourning, and the merciful?
All doomed
All doomed
Behold a new Christ
Behold the same old horde
Gather at the altering
New beginning, new word
And the word was death
And the word was without light
The new beatitude: "Good luck"
What of the pious, the pure of heart, the peaceful?
What of the meek, the mourning, and the merciful?
What of the righteous? What of the charitable?
What of the truthful, the dutiful, the decent?
Doomed are the poor
Doomed are the peaceful
Doomed are the meek
Doomed are the merciful
For the word is now death
And the word is now without light
The new beatitude:
"Fuck the doomed, you're on your own"
Behold the same old horde
Gather at the altering
New beginning, new word
And the word was death
And the word was without light
The new beatitude

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
This may actually be the most Christian song APC has ever put out. It condemns those fake people who calls themselves Christians while simultaneously ignoring or attacking the actual values Jesus taught. The new god in this song is clearly Trump, and people like him: demagogues who use the Bible to gain followers but twist the message of it to their own ends. Trump is far closer to the Anti-Christ than to anyone godly, and everything he represents is a slap in the face to true Christianity. And yet those people practically worship him. Meanwhile, the people really represents those values of peacefulness, helping the poor and downtrodden, etc.--some may call themselves Christian, but many do not--are doomed because they always get trampled by the hateful demagogues, the warmongers, the greedy wealth hoarders, etc. This is the perfect song for the Trump era.
@Starwatcher23
I created an account to call you a dumb add. They are just talking of society and how it has always been. Religion is just designed to keep the poor hopeful. Something to turn to when they have nothing. APC is damn sure not Christian. They are real
Just continue looking at the stars. But quit listening to the fuckin news and think for yourself.
@Starwatcher23 trump isn't all that bad. Blindly hating him for the sake of hating him is not very intelligent..
@Starwatcher23 I am not Christian, but this song is certainly a lament that Christ's sentiments - as expressed in the Sermon on the Mount - have been essentially reversed in modern culture. Most folks haven't picked up on the biblical links, so don't let these fiends get you down. For the most part, they will be parroting the Think for Yourself line, oblivious of the fact that someone else had to tell them to think for themselves :-)

@Starwatcher23
I would say that this song could definitely be representing the Trump administration, but I do believe that, as always, A Perfect Circle's music covers a much broader spectrum of history and the world at large than an american presidency still in its infancy.
Also, while I agree Trump is not a great president; it does no one any good to hate the poor fellow. Hatred and anger are a poison we drink hoping that another will suffer the ill effects.
@Rekoath Yes, Trump that poor, poor fellow.

@Starwatcher23 I'd say TalkTalk is more Christian than this. This song alludes to the Sermon on the Mount, but it's message is quite pessimistic. TalkTalk meanwhile explicitly tells the listener to try walking like Jesus.
@Starwatcher23 Yeah... this didn't age well lol
