i think this song is about a guy who went through a rough period of life, one filled with self-discovery, and this is his reflection on that process and his take on where he is now in his journey through life. he's saying he's finally okay with who he is and he loves himself, not in a narcissistic way, but in a way that is healthy and good, as in his self-esteem has improved.
"happiness coming and going" could be a reference to how everyone (no matter how secure you are with yourself) has days when they are happier than others and how life and no one is perfect and we all have times when we feel down or discouraged. but the way he sings this line you can hear the hope in his voice, implying how no matter how bad he may feel one day, he knows it's not permanent and tomorrow is a new day.
i think this song has two facets, one being the above tone of self-discovery and redemption, but also kind of telling the story of how at the same time he's finally happy with himself on his own he has met someone who he is falling in love with: "i watch you look at me i feel my fever growing, i know just where i am"
overall this song is about how two aspects of his life are converging, his happiness that he finds within himself or his individual relationship he has with his "self" and this new relationship that's forming with his romantic interest.
i think the line "it's just a change in me, something in my liberty" is about the balance he's found with this new person, he feels himself changing into someone who can be with someone else and commit but also still, in essence, free in this newly-forming relationship.

Looking for love in others will only leave you on your own in the end, (You come in on your own and you leave on your own) but if you're lucky, like our friend Richard Ashcroft, maybe one day you'll realize that "all the love [you] have is in your mind". A Lucky Man can find happiness and love in himself, since all others will leave his life some day and in some way. It's the kind of love that will never die.

Happiness comes from all over but at the end of the day it is all in are mind. we choose where are happiness comes from but it is are choice to be happy, even if some days that is harder then others. lastly we must love are self before others can love us. I agree with the theme that the lyrics are about generally finding that love within which at most times is very elusive. In the end if people in your circle either friends or family let you down you've got to find the power within to love yourself, cos in the end you come in on your own and out on your own.
This song is awesome! Especially the intro. As for the meaning of the song. I think it means finally finding inner peace and a sense of happiness. Going through life trying to find happiness through someone or something else just will not cut it. Life is one big mirage of hopes and fanciful dreams perpetrated by Madison Avenue. After a while we all wise up and realize that its gotta come from within. You just can't get it from a glossy magazine. Sometimes one has to turn many corners before seeing the light. And once you finally get there you really are more confident and you walk with much more purpose knowing where you're going.
Actually I believe this has to do with what I heard once: "you won't be able to love anyone unless you love yourself first"
That's the only love in our life that we are sure won't die, I mean if we love ourselves that won't ever change and that love will only die when we die.

To me, it reminds me of my struggles last year, that year being 7th grade, and how I just was "depressed", which I really wasn't, and kept falling in love with girls and having no self-esteem, it was an awful year. But out of all the awfulness, I came to terms with myself about love, and "All the love I have is in my mind". I'm a lucky man to have discovered this. This is one of my all-time favorite songs, and even in this MP3 ruled age, I went out and got the cd "Urban Hymns" after hearing it was awesome. Then I was really disappointed to listen and not really like any other songs except for "weeping willow" "Lucky Man" and "Bittersweet Symphony". Bummer. Damn Stones suing one of the best bands out there. Oh well, Ashcroft lives on.

Must be awesome to be omniscient. I thought the idea of truly great songs is that they mean different things to different people - but being a mere mortal, I might well be wrong.
The fulcrum of this song for me is 'All the love I have is in my mind,' I think we've all felt like that at some stage of our lives or another. I also love the way it builds from the accoustic beginning to a series of vocal and melodical layers, like a wave of emotions. Cracking song that easily surpasses any of his later stuff in my view.
