Abandoned Love Lyrics
I've been deceived by the clown inside of me.
I thought that he was righteous but he's vain
Oh, something's a-telling me I wear the ball and chain.
He's always off somewhere when I need him most.
The Spanish moon is rising on the hill
But my heart is a-tellin' me I love ya still.
I see you in the streets, I begin to swoon.
I love to see you dress before the mirror
Won't you let me in your room one time 'fore I finally disappear?
To hide what they've got left behind their eyes.
But me, I can't cover what I am
Wherever the children go I'll follow them.
But as long as I love you I'm not free.
How long must I suffer such abuse
Won't you let me see you smile one time before I turn you loose?
The pot of gold is only make-believe.
The treasure can't be found by men who search
Whose gods are dead and whose queens are in the church.
I asked ya please to cross me off-a your list.
My head tells me it's time to make a change
But my heart is telling me I love ya but you're strange.
Take off your heavy make-up and your shawl.
Won't you descend from the throne, from where you sit?
Let me feel your love one more time before I abandon it.

Brilliant examination of knowing a relationship is over but not wanting it to be, wanting to be the first to leave but not wanting to leave at all... There's a live version of this where the last three verses are different (and better, IMO).
I can't play the game no more, I can't abide by their stupid rules which kept me sick inside They've been made by men who've given up the search Whose gods are dead and whose queens are in the church.
Send out for Saint John the Evangelist All my friends are drunk, they can be dismissed. My head says that it's time to make a change But my heart is telling me I love ya but you're strange.
So step lightly, darling, near the wall Put on your heavy make-up, wear your shawl. Won't you descend from the throne, from where you sit? Let me feel your love one more time before I abandon it.

I've never heard a better rendition of a failed relationship. Every feeling, every instance, and ever action of a breaking love has been put onto paper. I learned this song since it's probably the closest feeling I've ever heard outside my own mind. It is my favorite Dylan song.

This is a great song. Dylan is a genious when he writes songs. Too bad this isnt on any albums.

Oh, I love biograph. I downloaded this song, and loved it right away. "I've been decieved by the clown inside of me...", don't we all have a clown inside of us, a decieving clown? It's amazing, I play it all the time.

I wish he would have included this on either "Blood on the Tracks" or "Desire", it would have really helped "Desire".
It was recorded during the Desire sessions - apparently on a very prolific night along wiht Isis, One More Cup of Coffee, and I can't remember what else.

One Of My Favorite Dylan Songs. I Think It Probably Has Some More Distinct Vocals Then Usual, But Maybe Its Me

This song is like my guilty pleasure... lol It's great, don't get me wrong, but not the type of Dylan I usually listen to... But I love it so much! It's entrancing...

amazing song... one of my favorite Dylan lyrics... im surprised noone has made any detail interpretations. id like to hear some comments about the 5th verse for example...
"The treasure can't be found by men who search Whose gods are dead and whose queens are in the church"
this line just kills me... his gods are dead yet they still are worshiped... noone's hearing the prayers although he knows that he still chooses to hold on to that lost cause but the lines above it says that he has finally accepted that fact and its time he moves on... anyways that what i think i was hoping id find a comment on that to compare..
overall i couldnt agree more with scrappy123.. great song.

To me, this ranks in Dylan's top 5. Lyrically, of course. But even musically, the song stikes that emotion. Its commendable how Dylan can evoke emotions even you may cant relate to the song personally.
When I think of this song in the context of my breakup, I can't fight back tears. I wonder how many broken hearts Dylan must have healed through his words, in addition to his own.
Great Song (takes a bow).

What a great F'n song. For the BEST live version I have ever heard of this one go to youtube.com and type in "the bitter end, abandoned love" You'll have to listen twice its that good. Dylan makes me wish I had a woman in my life....or does it???
