I think this might be the perfect ending song of all time. It's very hard to write a song that sums up the entire theme of an album. The only other one I can think of is "Wake Up" by Alanis Morrisette, but the bonus track sort of screwed that sentiment to pieces. As I think about it, "Shelter from the Storm" is about Dylan finally detatching himself from his ugly relationship with his wife. From what I know, that relationship wasn't the best one on Earth. After he woke up and realized she might not come back, he still put up a candle for her because he still loves her and the candle is this song "Buckets of Rain". He must move on, but there's still a chance that they'll maybe find their way back to that candle and hopefully it relights the fire between them. I doubt if that ever happened, but we can idealize it in our imaginations. Bob Dylan is a master wordsmith and mental artist and I hope these songs live on forever.

there is a very select group of songs that literally give me chills when i listen to them or read the lyrics. this is one of them.

My dad and I are going to play this song at my grandpa's funeral in a week along with "Tangled Up In Blue." This was the album that made my grandpa my grandpa. His favorite was "Tangled Up In Blue." This album makes me remember all the good times me and my brother spent with him.

i think this song is about different feelings felt for one person during various points in a relationship...but i'm not sure...all i do know is that Blood On The Tracks has nine of the greatest songs ever written, including "Tangled Up In Blue" and "Idiot Wind," but once it gets to the last song, the simplest, most subtle song on the album, every other song fades from memory as if they were never even played...this might no be the best song on Blood, but it's the most important...

i love the use of this song in the moonlight mile soundtrack. it just adds so much to the scene. well, dylan makes anyhting better of course...

when it comes to evoking personal emotion and making it universally understood, dylan's number one. he takes things that might seem trivial to some, and makes them into symbolic and beautiful images...this song makes me want to laugh and cry all at once.

this IS the perfect ending song of all time. not only does it sum up everything that the album has done up to the point, it points the way forward. without it at the end, blood on the tracks would be a lot more desolate, a lot more hopeless, and a lot less nuanced. if you've just broken up with someone, do not play you're a big girl now, if you see her say hello or shelter from the storm....play this. it will give you complete and utter closure.

"Everything about you is bringing me Misery." Bob Dylan songs never cease to amaze me - very very few odes, outright. Rather, he dedicates music to injustice, imperfections, ending.. He's just so non-pop. I love that.
