You're a Big Girl Now Lyrics

Our conversation was short and sweet
It nearly swept me off-a my feet.
And I'm back in the rain, oh, oh,
And you are on dry land.
You made it there somehow
You're a big girl now.

Bird on the horizon, sittin' on a fence,
He's singin' his song for me at his own expense.
And I'm just like that bird, oh, oh,
Singin' just for you.
I hope that you can hear,
Hear me singin' through these tears.

Time is a jet plane, it moves too fast
Oh, but what a shame if all we've shared can't last.
I can change, I swear, oh, oh,
See what you can do.
I can make it through,
You can make it too.

Love is so simple, to quote a phrase,
You've known it all the time, I'm learnin' it these days.
Oh, I know where I can find you, oh, oh,
In somebody's room.
It's a price I have to pay
You're a big girl all the way.

A change in the weather is known to be extreme
But what's the sense of changing horses in midstream?
I'm going out of my mind, oh, oh,
With a pain that stops and starts
Like a corkscrew to my heart
Ever since we've been apart.

this song just shows dylan's mastery of melody to the fullest. the way it builds up during the first part of each verse and then unleashes that utterly devastating howl, then falls back, resigned, to the wearied "you're a big girl...".....god. just so perfectly nails the kind of emotion he's going for, frustration mixed with regret with hopelessness.

it's so good he can even put a horrible line like "time is a jet plane, it moves too fast" in there and get away with it

He could just have easily called this song regret, because you can feel his regret throughout this. A mistake has been made, and now Dylan wants her back. He seems almost as if he is pleading to have her back, but he seems to know that he has blown it. "It's a price I have to pay," he concedes towards the end. And I'm sure anyone who has been hurt in love can relate to "a pain that stops and starts, like a corkscrew to my heart." Dylan is a great lyricist because he has a great understanding of human nature. Lesser songwriters would not observe that the pain of love can stop and start, but Dylan has. And you can't help but feel for him here. Blood on the Tracks is perhaps his most honest body of work, and this song is the standout track.

One of the things I like about this song is the neat little frame work that it is put in. If you choose to look at it this way, the last line (ever since we've been apart) could be a reference to the very last meeting he had with this person. You see the song starts out talking about a conversation. My thoughts are that this conversation with an old lover brought back all these memories and emotions, and when he says that last line, it can be taken two ways. The most obvious way would be that he is talking about when ever the love between them was broken, but a more subtle interpretation is that he is talking about how he has felt just since that conversation that is referenced at the beginning of the song.

Now, who else could stir up all this interpretation between essentially two lines of a song besides dear old robert?

I would like to say that this song is sad, but it as if it has invented an emotion that has never been felt before, so the mere word 'sad' hardly does any justice.

Absolutly touching song, as always, from this amazing artist. I believe this song is about a guy on a bench thinking about the doughter he had, but never knew about. A fathers love, a fathers dispair! Bob Dylan's music is magic!!

Interesting take. I used to listen to this song in college and thought it was about lovesickness. But now, when I sing it to my daughters (who are growing up too quickly) it has taken on a new meaning for me. One that you pick up on here. So powerful. Probably my favorite song ever written.

Yes agreed, pain must stop and start for it's power lies in it's surprise. I dont think though that he is pleading to have her back, but maybe recognising the consequences of misguided beliefs on love, and the hurt recieved and inflicted by both relations.

a corkscrew to my heart Where does he come out with this things? Such a genious!

And when he says I can change, I swear, oh, oh, Wow, such honesty.

This is the saddest song of all time, and one of the most beautiful. It's so easy to identify with; it's such a perfect articulation of a feeling most of us know. That's Dylan's skill, of course...putting things into words in a way that makes you think "I could written that!" but you know that's not the truth.

I don't much like the version on BOTT, but the Biograph version is great.

I read Prozac Nation (GREAT BOOK) and part of this song is in it. When I hear this song I don't really hear the lyrics, I think about the book. But the book is cool, the song is cool. So it's all good!
