Come Sail Away Lyrics
I've got to be free free to face the life that's ahead of me
On board I'm the captain so climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I'll try oh Lord I'll try to carry on
Some happy some sad
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we had
We live happily forever so the story goes
But somehow we missed out on that pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can to carry on
They sang to me this song of hope and this is what they said
They said come sail away come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away come sail away
Come sail away with me
They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies
Singing come sail away come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away come sail away
Come sail away with me

Taken from songfacts.com:
"This contains an allusion to the Bible verse of Ezekiel chapter 1:1-28 where a large wheel/cloud (depending on text) appears to Ezekiel and gives him instructions from God: "A gathering of angels appeared above my head. They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said... (later in song)... I thought that they were angels, but to my surprise, they climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies." Some people believe the figure Ezekiel saw was not a messenger sent from God but an alien space craft or a time machine from the future."
Seems plausible. Sorry if I ruined the song for anyone :P
@KellyW Why must you bring the buybull into the discussion? That, and which god from mythology? Quetzalcoatl? Krishna? Odin? Hephaestus? Cu Culainn? Zeus? Thor? Vishnu?

I think this song goes hand-in-hand with Boat On A River...it's just about finding peace. Going in search of "home."
Nice. :)
Nice. :)
Yeah, you like the 'virgin sea' part. It's understandable

@IllToast2That Boat on a River, with tangerine trees and marmalade skies?

this songs makes me stop crying.
I can't believe not a single person actually got the meaning of this song right but its apparent that everyone here lived on the right side of the tracks their entire lives so I can understand being ignorant to its true meaning. Its about heroin use or ODing to be exact. Its a great song but yeah thats what it means when they say A gathering of angels appeared above my head, they sang this song of hope to me and this is what they said, Come sail away...because back then Heroin ODing was common back then shit even Janis...

@baby smacks Interestingly and different from you, it makes me begin crying because I am studying in a maritime faculty in order to be a master on merchant ships so I am able to understand the straight and direct meaning of this song. A seaman spends his life at sea to make money for those he loves and cares, in the doing of it, all he feels is explained in an emotional way in this song.

To me, this song is about doing whatever it takes to achieve your dreams. The angels are the good, aliens the bad. But good or bad, you need to achieve your dreams by yourself, not with the assistance of fictional figures.

If the lyrics are overly cheesy it's because STYX is an overly cheesy band. They rock though, I'm a big STYX fan. America's gaudy answer to 70's/80's brit-pop.

The song was written when Styxx was still struggling to make a name for themselves. It is about life on the road and chasing their dreams.
Sailing away is leaving to chase their dreams.
They had some miner hits but nothing that made them a household name, They were touring nonstop but always an opening act never the headliner. This is their somehow missing out on the pot of gold.
But still they try the best that they can. When the sailing switches from a boat to a starship, this is their still chasing the dream where ever it may lead.

Has anybody heard Cartman's version on South Park. Its pretty damn funny! They use Styx's original music, with Cartmans sweet voice, and chef jumps in towards the end. I posted the lyrics. Just waitin for em to get approved!

The Cartmen Version is great... no comparison to the styx version, but still great.

THIS SONG MAKES SWEET LOVE TO IT'S OWN EPIC GLORY. I like to sing this on the water or at school. Deep inside though, it's all about the freaks and geeks connection. Styx Stynx, I agree.

Two things: Although every band was probably on SOMETHING during the seventies and eighties, some talented songwriters/singers have the ability to let random thoughts write a song. And this song wold certainly appear to be written by someone who was high. I'm not saying DeYoung or whoever wrote it wasn't, but that's my point.
Secondly, I believe this song is not TOO cheesy, just enough, and that's it about adventure and dreams.
