Like A Rock Lyrics

Stood there boldly
Sweatin' in the sun
Felt like a million
Felt like number one
The height of summer
I'd never felt that strong
Like a rock

I was eighteen
Didn't have a care
Working for peanuts
Not a dime to spare
But I was lean and
Solid everywhere
Like a rock

My hands were steady
My eyes were clear and bright
My walk had purpose
My steps were quick and light
And I held firmly
To what I felt was right
Like a rock

Like a rock, I was strong as I could be
Like a rock, nothin' ever got to me
Like a rock, I was something to see
Like a rock

And I stood arrow straight
Unencumbered by the weight
Of all these hustlers and their schemes
I stood proud, I stood tall
High above it all
I still believed in my dreams

Twenty years now
Where'd they go?
Twenty years
I don't know
I sit and I wonder sometimes
Where they've gone

And sometimes late at night
When I'm bathed in the firelight
The moon comes callin' a ghostly white
And I recall
I recall

Like a rock, standin' arrow straight
Like a rock, chargin' from the gate
Like a rock, carryin' the weight
Like a rock

Like a rock, the sun upon my skin
Like a rock, hard against the wind
Like a rock, I see myself again
Like a rock

I think the song is from a middle aged man's perspective and is a refelection on how great it was to be in his prime physically. At that point in our lives, we did not have the complications we must deal with as we age and take on responsibility.

I don't know about anyone else, but everytime I hear this song, I think of Chevy trucks; they used this song in their ads forever.

Pretty cut and dry, he's talking to his Coors Light.

Like a Rock stands as one of the best examples of how a advertising company can take 3 words from the lyrics and lose all meaning of the song.

Like a Rock, released 1986, is a protest song set 20 years after the fact, It's about remembering how we were when the country was young (the 60's in this case) and how we have lost that innocence and drive to change the world. When in the 60's we stood for ourselves, we fought the government... and won on more occasions than history would tell. But now nearly 50 years on, we still look for those days when we felt strong and right.

tl;dr The Rock is the power youth and the loss of it after 20 years.

This song is definitely about a guy who's remembering his youth.

He's recalling his salad days when he was youthful and strong, ie "like a rock." But, it's not just physically, but emotionally as well.

What does he mean, though, when he talks about how he sees himself once again "like a rock?" Last verse.

@cubbyblues His wisdom, my friend. The wisdom that only age can bring.

I agree that it's about a guy remembering when he's young. I think the "like a rock" part in the last verse means that he's done with remembering what he was like and he's trying to be like he was when he was young.

To me, this song is about reflection.

He seems to be reflecting back on what he considers to be the best time in his life. He's noticing how much he changed and wondering what happened to him.

At the end when he says that he sees himself again, I believe he has started to believe in himself again and he feels stronger.

I agree. I wonder why your post was given big thumbs down. I tried to rectify that:)
