Purity Ring – Belispeak Lyrics 29 days ago
I think this song is about her grandma who is dying, and suffering as she does so. She wishes she could save her, she also yearns for things as they used to be before life took its toll on them both.
“Grandma, my sleep is narrow (she isn’t sleeping well because her mind is troubled, worrying and grieving, thinking about the past)
Bid you bring me some... strong... drink (she wishes her grandma could bring her a strong drink to help her sleep, like when she used to bring her orange juice to soothe her at night)
Strain out the pulps and set them close outside (that might have been what her grandma used to do for her, since perhaps she liked to snack on the pulp, but didn’t like them in her juice.)
For when my belly
For when my little belly speaks (when she gets hungry for a snack in the middle of the night)

Grandma, there’s air beneath my bed
And it whispers, and it whispers when I rest (there’s ‘monsters’ under the bed)
Bid hem the skirts in salt and vinegar, vinegar
And hover closely
Oh hover closely under head (to protect from the monsters or demons)

Grandma, the water is rising
My boundless hair has gotten green (they have been in deep water for some time, like the expression. So long that algae has grown in her hair. Now they are in too deep.)
I’ll be your swimming forest island
Bid you walk safely, safely over me (she wants to carry her grandma through the rough waters pulling them under, and wants her to be where her feet can be dry and she can walk safely through)

Grandma, my hands have wandered
And my legs, my little legs are getting weak (she has searched everywhere and got no solution, she has exhausted herself.)
Bid lend me your wispy frame
And guard my powers
Guard my precious powers in its cage (she wants to trade places with her grandma so that she doesn’t have to suffer, and that she may be well again and in her prime. She just trusts she take care of her body in her place)

Grandma, I’ve been unruly
In my dreams and with my speech (she has felt indignant and probably acted out in anger)
Drill little holes into my eyelids
That I might see you
That I might see you when I...
Sleep (she hopes that she will still see her grandma when she is gone, even if it’s only in her dreams or while she sleeps)
