ITA w/ the PP about the lyric correction. i had always thought that line meant that her old man set her clothes on fire, but a friend suggested that her old man sold her clothes for a matchbox of dope. makes sense. that'd sure give me the blues. |

Hoodoo Gurus – Zanzibar Lyrics

I love this song. It's been one of my favorites for damn near 20 years. But I'm a fan of story telling songs. The only good modern story tellers I've found are Todd Snider and the Decemberists. What ever happened to the Gurus anway? I hope they are well. They were both brilliant and fun. |

The Decemberists – The Mariner's Revenge Song Lyrics

LMAO @ StockinBrock's "gateway drug" analogy!
Colin is a genius. I adore him and his lyrical themes of love, death, and interesting combinations thereof.
And I have to disagree on the point that a PP about our hero being a schizophrenic. I think that rather than being deliusional, he's literally haunted by his mother's ghost. She is with him as the sail out to sea. The curse that she sings becomes stronger as they near the evil mariner and she states that "always your mother will watch over you as you avenge this wicked deed." I believe that's why, that fateful night "we" had you in "our" sights after 20 months at sea, and why he was so fortunate to be spared when his shipmates perished. But that's just my humble but correct opinion. ;P |
