I think this song isn't as simple as it being about somebody leaving. I think it's actually written quite sarcastically, maybe the leaving person has found out their partner has lied/cheated and cannot stay. Maybe they don't mean any of what they say. |

'Complete antithesis of a Christmas Song'. I love it so much. I am of the opinion that it was about a young, reckless mand and woman who constructed their dreams around each other so much, they failed to realise it was doomed from the outset. However, there is a realisation that the young man in question appears to have stolen all that was pivotal for the young woman, and now it's all gone to rack and ruin, drink, drugs, sex. Happy Christmas your arse, I love it. It's going in all my Christas cards this year. The lines that get me are 'you were handsome, you were pretty'....evidently this has all been lost to some pipe dream that ended with lying on a bed on a drip in hospital.
It is completely sad, and like I mentioned an antithesis to a true Christmas song, and a bloody welcome relief too. |

Yet, they left behind the most important, significant, world stoppingly astounding thing that could ever happen to them. Love. There's a poem called Musee Des Beaux Arts by Auden, that has the exact same sentiment. How does the world carry on as if nothing had ever happened when there are disasters, wars and hearts being broken every day?
I love the sheer simplicity of 'don't they know its the end of the world, cause you don't love me anymore'. There's no fancy flourish, or an overdone crescendo, just simple, sheer heartache.
However, on a lighter side, there may be hope, as it states 'why does my heart go on beating', which could be interpreted as my body is carrying on, my body is surviving, but why? I'd take the fact that your body is surviving, as a sign that your mind is meant to, too. |

Hmmm. I want to send this song to someone who I feel for at the moment. To me, it seems he's out of all he can get from this girl, yet she sings it right back to him, and demonstrates to me, she's made of stronger stuff than 'throwing her love' like that.
I like the metaphor of mountains, he wants the calmness of the sea compared to the ruggedness of the mountains, maybe meaning he wants a deeper love than just something with a rocky exterior. However, seas are conniving, sly, and tricky. You think you know what to expect, but they can creep up unawares, and suffocate you. |

This song to me means basically, a lack of inspiration. Being a writer I bloody well know what thats like. The concept of eskimo friend could be a muse, eskimo being a person who survives in a cold climate, so his friend could only emerge when he needs help, or is living in his own cold world. It could be a physical embodiment or part of his conscious.
The song, to me, appears to be a search, 'tapping doors', 'heading west', in search of something, that is so close ot being found, but yet still a way to go. |
