The Long Winters – Ultimatum Lyrics
|
I think the singer adores this person, but refuses to commit. The "ultimatum" of the title is presumably "marry me or we're through".
"It was agreed I came to burn leaves
It's all I ever claimed to do
A ploughman i'll never grow into"
He's saying that he has never been the marrying type and has made no pretenses that he was. So why is she expecting to do something he never meant to, to be something he isn't.
That's my take on it. |

Means five hundred float.
One thousand people means
Five hundred don’t"

Pedro the Lion – The Devil Is Beating His Wife Lyrics

god, the part of this song after "what a cruel god we've got" is just amazing. the almost primal wails/moans. amazing.
to me, this song is about "solutions" that don't end up solving anything. the first few verses deal with a guy that's hit the road, leaving his family behind. but the endless monotony of highway after highway isn't the solution to his problems that he dreamed it would be. his family, his attachments, weren't the problem. and now he's asking some convenience store clerk back to his room. |

I'm still not too sure about some of these lyrics, but I couldn't find them anywhere on the net so I took my best shot.
Love this song, though. |

Joe Purdy – I Love the Rain the Most When it Stops Lyrics
| 19 years ago

i think the first couplet is:
I love the rain the most when it stops
And we can see the big white house here in the docks
He wrote and recorded this whole album on a houseboat over the duration of a week. You can hear the waves in the background on a lot of these songs. |

Iron & Wine – Muddy Hymnal Lyrics

also, i love the line "a broken bow across a long lost violin"
it's like, violin is sort of a symbol of despair and grief. like how if you're feeling sorry for yourself, people will joke and pretend to play a violin to score your tragedy.
it's like he hasn't used his violin in such a long time, now he's come to play it he finds his bow broken. it's been so long since he's let his emotions out, he can't do it properly any more. the sound isn't beautiful and natural, but harsh and violent. |

i think it's about a man that's lost his wife and loses his faith in god. he leaves his kids at the pub and goes to vandalise the church. the policeman finds him asleep at his wife's grave. his wife, now an angel, tells the policeman that "it never ends the way we had it planned." but she's still watching over him. |

A good friend made me a mix cd with this song on it, so it'll always remind me of our friendship. I couldn't care less what the real meaning is...

The Hidden Cameras – The Man That I Am with My Man Lyrics

despite the gay sex, water sports and blood-letting, this is a really beautiful song. haha.
i guess it's about being with somebody that you feel comfortable enough to do anything with. being with a person that can see the real you because you're just not afraid. |

"bleed" was how the song was labelled in the copy of the album i received.
"burn" certainly makes more sense though. |

The Decemberists – The Engine Driver Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
This song could be about a songwriter/musician/decemberists frontman.
Each of the professions he lists in the verses are various parts of being a touring musician.
"engine driver": touring across a country must feel.
"county lineman" or electrician: dealing with the equipment.
"moneylender": the business side of music.
and of course, a writer using fiction to work out a past relationship isn't a stretch of the imagine.
maybe colin's most autobigraphy song.
or i could be completely wrong.
either way, wonderful song. |

The Decemberists – We Both Go Down Together Lyrics
| 19 years ago
|
I don't think either of them necessarily die in this song.
"We fall but our souls are flying" could just be a rather poetic lyric about falling in love. Or even falling onto the veranda in an embrace. Of course, it could be more literal than that. But that possibility could lead on to Leslie Anne Levine. Their union was not supported by their parents so, if this song is the story of Leslie's conception, she could be forced to abort. Just a theory though. |

It's "the madness set in with the loss"
And it's about the monotony of everyday work and it's power to drive even the sanest person crazy. hence the businessman who loses his money and becomes the literal kind of throat cutter. |

I think this band's secret to success is their live show. I saw them supporting Martin Grech and they completely blew me away. That was months before their album came out but I still could remember some of the songs so clearly. I've seen them three times and they've always opened with this.
What an amazing band. |

The Decemberists – Los Angeles, I'm Yours Lyrics

I was playing this album (Her Majesty) for a friend of mine and when this song started she said "why does LA have so many songs written about how great it is" and after the first verse she said "oh... nevermind."
That seems to be most people's reaction to it. I'd love to be at an LA show when they play this song. |

Elliott Smith – Condor Ave. Lyrics

These are some of my favorite lyrics I've ever heard.
The story, I guess, is that that he had a huge fight with his girlfriend about something stupid and petty, and she drove away upset, crashed her car and died.
This is real poetry. It's beautiful. |
