Damien Rice – Rootless Tree Lyrics 17 years ago
Hey, I just want to thank jolson05 for posting that video link. What a great, great performance that was. I really enjoyed it. However, I'm going to disagree with you about the Rootless Tree performance. I didn't like it better than the album version and the f-bombs. I kind of think it's a different, very interesting take on the song. I like both versions for different reasons, and don't find them particularly comparable. The album version has all that heat-of-the-moment anger and emotion threatening to tear the song apart -- which I LOVE. This live, censored version, on the other hand, has a softer, more considered feel to it. It's as if he's had more time to settle down and think about this relationship. Still very powerful.

I have to say, I was SO nervous about the new album. 'O' was just so bloody brilliant, I couldn't imagine how he could possibly follow it up. But I dare see he's gone and done it. Wow.

The Chicks – Bitter End Lyrics 17 years ago
I also think this song is directed at the fans who abandoned them after the Bush comment. I hadn't thought about the radio stations, but that certainly fits as well.

I think what I love so much about this song (and the whole album, really) is that the Chicks are holding their heads high. They've managed to convey their regret over what happened without apologizing. They've got nothing to apologize for, yet they still wish things would have gone differently. They're not willing to beg and plead and compromise their principles to get those fairweather fans back, but they'll certainly welcome them back should they change their minds.

Eagles – The Last Resort Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow, I've heard this song many times before, but I actually listened to it for the first time recently, and was completely blown away. To me, this song is a brilliant commentary on the destructive forces (against the environment and other cultures) of Western civilization and the Church.

Furthermore, it implies an interesting theory on why people are so drawn to religion (and I'm not talking just Christianity here). Humans seem incapable of preserving the things they love (paradise), and yet we yearn for them continually. Religion of any form gives people hope that finding paradise is possible - whether in the afterlife (Heaven), through enlightenment (Buddhism), or any number of other means. The intriguing and implied twist is: can even heavenly paradise withstand humanity's destruction?

Tracy Chapman – The Rape Of The World Lyrics 18 years ago
This is like the ultimate environmental anthem, in my opinion. It's so haunting, the way she repeats "Mother of us all."

The Wallflowers – Closer To You Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a fascinating song, and I think an argument can be made for both interpretations above. But here's my take:

I think it's about the hardships of being a musician on the road, away from your loved ones. Imagine yourself on tour, traveling from city to city. With each concert done, that's one step closer to getting home. Every day that goes by brings him a little bit closer to the one he loves so much.

Also, I think it's easy to assume that the "you" pronoun is a lover, but it could just as easily be a child - especially considering the nostalgiac tone of the last two stanzas.

The Wallflowers – Murder 101 Lyrics 19 years ago
So I think this song has to do with love and inexperience. In other words, how badly you mess things up when you're young and new to relationships, how it's practically murder the mistakes you make.

But that's just my cursory take on it. Anyone else?

Train – Hopeless Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree that this is Train's best song. And that opening guitar is sooooo lovely and delicate. And I love the poetic use of language in the lyrics. "Hopelessly, helplessly", "you're in and out up and down, wonder if you're lost or found" There's such great sound to the words, they're really like an instrument themselves.

Bruce Springsteen – Brilliant Disguise Lyrics 19 years ago
Is it possible that this song is at least partially about the added strains on trust in relatinships that being famous involves? In other words, he's rich and famous, so he has to be extra careful with love, and it's much more difficult to trust someone.

In any case, it's a great song, one I've always loved.

Shawn Colvin – Nothing On Me Lyrics 19 years ago
This song makes a great anthem. While the song is specifically about freeing yourself from an unhealthy relationship, I enjoy the broader theme of reclaiming life, making a new start, and not taking shit from anyone. This song makes for a great listen right when you've reached the light at the end of the tunnel, and are leaving much behind, but have much ahead as well.

Jamie Cullum – All At Sea Lyrics 19 years ago
I just wanted to add that Cullum's piano work on this song is so beautiful and precious. He's an amazing talent. I bought this album for the title track, but All at Sea sucked me in on the first listen. Awesome song!

Wilson Phillips – Release Me Lyrics 19 years ago
I love the transition this song makes, from the quiet of the beginning when the speaker is ready for this relationship to be over but is still struggling with that realization ("I don't want to give up"), to the climactic finish when she has much more confidence in her decision, despite the lover's unwillingness to release her. The music and the words really work well on this song. Love that.

Neil Young – Old Man Lyrics 19 years ago
Interesting to read everyone's thoughts on this one. I hadn't heard the story about the farmer. I'd always fallen in line with the father-son story. But I think it can be more generally interpreted to just be about dealing with the disappointment of your elders, the expectations that are passed between generations, and the constant struggle to define oneself as separate from everything and everyone else.

Definitely a classic in my book.

Counting Crows – If I Could Give All My Love (Richard Manuel Is Dead) Lyrics 19 years ago
"Too catchy"? What's wrong with that?

I think that this album marked the return of the Counting Crows. It comes quite close to the perfection of their first album.

And this song is their best jam yet. And I agree, the piano is so much fun to listen to. But it's the guitar work, in my opinion, that is the best part. You can tell the band really went balls to the wall on this song, to stretch their skills.
