Nas – 2nd Childhood Lyrics 18 years ago
"Junior high school dropout, teachers never cared
They was paid just to show up and leave, no one succeeds
So he moves with his peers, different blocks, different years
Sittin on, different benches like it's musical chairs
All his peoples moved on in life, he's on the corners at night
with young dudes it's them he wanna be like"

Damn man. Nas really lays it down on this track.... especially that segment.

Well, sure... but I mean in modern times relative to now. So, let's say in the last 40 years. I'd say Clinton was more pro-business and has more core republican values than Nixon.

you mean Bloc Party sounds like Gang of Four.... ya know... considering they wrote this song 20+ years before Bloc Party even formed as a band... :-)

this song is incredible..... the influence of this song, and this band, is mind-boggling.

At the Drive-In – Catacombs Lyrics 19 years ago
I've heard from various people and places that nearly every song on Relationship of Command is political, though at times incredibly veiled by the convolution of the lyrics.... a parallel to the Trojan War may very well be possible, but they are probably also relating it to current political events. American interventions, etc.... but it could be a commentary on American societal structure, marriage markets... ("in laymen's terms, sewn through matrimony" )... meaningless of consumerism.... or it could be entirely non-political. Not too sure myself.

it's nice and convenient that he claims that the Afghani's were "praying to Allah" for the U.S. to come carpet bombing, and that the only thing we destroyed were the Taliban.

Bloc Party – Helicopter Lyrics 19 years ago
I took the "three out of five" part as signifying the fact that they (we) invaded Iraq on the possibility of WMD's being there. (Yet, it infact seems they were wrong.)

and I just assumed the United States was the "bastard child" of Europe (originating as British Colonies and other European settlements)

Crass – Bloody Revolution Lyrics 19 years ago
The ideals of communism remain unchanged, whether or not until now they have been distorted by tyrants and murderers. The ideals of democracy have been equally distorted, but many still rally behind them. Regardless of how decent ideals have been abused, they are still something to strive for... though Crass points out wonderfully that violence cannot be the method.

Crass – Punk Is Dead Lyrics 19 years ago
Joe Boxer - I think what Crass was getting at was the hypocrisy of the act of signing to CBS records. Perhaps the music didn't change, but at the same time how can you preach against something so strongly and then get rich off of it at the time? I love the Clash, they were a great band... but I wouldn't say they stayed true to the ideals of punk rock.

Crass is constantly dissing them, it's really funny.

I don't think they are acting as "punk police", they were just pointing out that when the corporate machine has begun to repackage and promote "punk" bands, it's over. They had commercialized what was once partially based on anti-commercialism, somehow. Exactly like they commercialized hippy, as they point out.

This song is pathetic. The worst kind of ignorance. It conveniently excludes very important context in relation to 9-11, the reasons behind it, the full perspective of the American response, and many more important historical and political realities.

Anti-Flag – 911 For Peace Lyrics 19 years ago
haha, wow. i said they seem very SIMILAR. not the SAME. Yeah, that may be true for a very generic definition of socialism and anarchy... but many anarchist intelletcuals ascribe themselves to "anarcho-syndacalism", which is as they call it a "voluntary socialism". This basically entails a collective with rules and what not, but with no central establishment. Kinda like the Kibbutzium in Israel, which are on the unfortunate decline due to the militarization of the country. But, either way my point is there are very many similarities between the two ideas, especially in ideals and values.

Toby Keith – The Taliban Song Lyrics 19 years ago
what's "funny" is that in the original war in Afghanistan (circa 1980) against Russia, the group the US was backing was so horrible that the Taliban were actually WELCOMED in Kabul. sure, everyone knew the Taliban was bad, but at least they established some kind of order (albeit a totalitarian kind). the so-called Northern Alliance were simply pillaging and brutalizing the population. and he's kinda "fucking around", but in the context of songs like "the angry american" and what not it's pretty safe to say this guy is a moron who has no concept of international law (which the US agreed to and claims to uphold while violating it constantly), or any aspect of the culture of the middle-east (let alone afghanistan) beyond what he gets from the conjecture of those around him or the slim generalizations or misunderstandings from the US Media.

Choking Victim – Infested Lyrics 19 years ago
you realize these guys are squatters, right? this song is about body lice, head lice, scabies, etc. etc. The subtitle of this song is "The Lindane Conspiracy Pt 1". Lindane is a lotion used to rid yourself of body lice and what not. It's given out in clinics to people (usually the homeless) who get lice and can't afford treatment. I've heard claims (as STZA makes) that it can be cancer-giving. It is scientifically proven to temporarily fuck up your nervous system amongst other things.

Anyway, I don't really think this song is about "Drugs" or "STD's".

Operation Ivy – Unity Lyrics 19 years ago
rancidrocks:

if only the world was so simple. violence is, in part, actually what got us in the mess of being targets of international terrorism. if you look at the history of Al-Qaeda you'll see that Osama Bin Laden was once an important ALLY of the United States in the original war in Afghanistan (1980). The CIA provided him with intelligence and training, as well as hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid. Meanwhile his group was conducting terrorist attacks (against civilians too) in Russia so severe that it almost sparked a nuclear war between them and Pakistan. Quickly after receiving our overwhelming support through a very violent conflict Bin Laden became increasingly suspicious of the US, as we began amassing troops in Saudi Arabia the holiest land to Muslims. They had almost immediately turned against our ally Egypt, backing the assassination of the president around 6 months after receiving our aid. Now, Americans like to forget all of this, but it would seem terrorism is okay as long as it's directed at our enemies. This is only one small example of the hypocrisy of American Policy.
In Turkey, the government had been massacring Kurdish populations (wiping out entire villages, killing tens of thousands of Kurds) with our support (we supplied 90% of the weapons if you look at international arms sales reports). Meanwhile, we are condemning our former ally Saddam Huessein for committing crimes against Iraqi Kurds (using chemical weapons that were made previously with US support, even some US SUPPLIES), though the numbers were much smaller than the body count in Turkey. Our condemnations also came some time after the fact, as during the crimes (which were publically discussed in the UN Security Council) we blocked resolutions and provided foreign aid to Hussein.
Also, the support of Indonesia through some of their worst crimes. After invading the small nation of East Timor in the late 70's Indonesia conduct series genocidal policies, resulting in the deaths of 200,000 East Timorese and hundreds of thousands forced into concentration camps. All of this was done with massive support from the US, 90% of the arms provided by the US even though official US Policy claims that all weapons sold can only be used in "defense" of a nation who receives them. When UN Resolutions were proposed to help East Timor against the genocidal Indonesians the US vetoed every one. The US representative to the UN wrote in his memoirs: "I had distinct orders from the US Government to prevent UN action in Timor and I carried them out with ease"
To suggest that violence in the world, for whatever the cause, has reduced violence historically is abusrd. The best way we could reduce violence (and terrorism) would be to STOP PARTICIPATING AND PERPETUATING IT AROUND THE GLOBE. Violence must be reserved for the absolute last resort in foreign policy, and it should not be the mass killing of people, many of them innocent. Focused, limited strikes would be much more effective in preventing violence and terrorism. The current use of US Military power is enabling terrorists to recruit even more young men in the Middle East and around the world. There are many reasons for terrorism, simply "killing or detaining" suspected terrorists fails to address the root of the problem. We must ask "why are we hated?" and "why will people give their lives to inflict harm upon our citizens?"

Sole – Selling Live Water Lyrics 19 years ago
my favorite lines from this song are

"from 2002 to 1984. go buy a playstation 2; this is what your enemy looks like:
an infrared blotch on a screen. for 30 lb. shells,
they run, run out of breath, rest, stop and get killed
'cause god wants mcdonald's plots on every desert shield"

incredible. Sole is one of my favorite MCs of all time. the most powerful delivery i've ever heard, great lyrics, great flow and style. I've seen him twice, but at the Roxy in LA it was the best.... he had a live cello player doing all the melodies of the beats and he was on a drum machine with ducktaped American flags on the side while he ran around stage with incredible energy (while he sported some State Department and Presidential Seal Medallions, hahaha). I highly recommend checking Sole out live.

Thursday – Autobiography of a Nation Lyrics 19 years ago
Napoleon Solo -

The United States, especially in the de-centralized government of the colonies most definitely did practice certain policies of genocide. It was very openly discussed too, as certain intellectuals within the colonies wrote books about how to destroy indian culture. they even gave 4 or 5 main points, including how to disrupt birth within the indian community and stealing women to be impregnated by white settlers and forced to conform in the European colonies. Also there is compelling historical evidence to suggest that European settlers knowingly gave Indians diseased blankets, and that should constitute biological warfare (they weren't the first to use such techniques, Genghis Kahn would catapult the bodies of those who died of the plague over the walls of cities he attacked). All of this, and more (such as the attitude of Christopher Colombus and other prominent figures, the outright killing of thousands of Indians, etc), should lead us to believe that we never had much interest in co-existing with American Indians. Even it is as you suggest, that we wanted them to be integrated into our society, attempting to coerce them into European power structure, which held their traditional beliefs as "savage" and "ungodly", is hardly a kind gesture. And to suggest that many American Indian tribes held similar violent tendencies is hardly a justification for our own crimes. Also, I would suggest California should be apart of Mexico (unless we could have LAWFULLY acquired it), as should the plains be the Sioux's (for the same reason). While this things are far in the past and nothing can really be done to rectify the situations, we should remember these things and realize that as a nation of this world, especially being America (the most powerful and influential nation), we have a great responsibility to act in a lawful, humane manner.

anarchy could work, and the human spirit is not something to be underestimated. why would anyone want you to believe that it would work in this society? you're taught that it never could work, you're taught and told that people can never work together in such a peaceful manner, because the "ignorant masses" would just fuck it up. Personally, I think that is a bunch of shit. There are plenty of anarcho-syndacylist societies that have been created throughout history that functioned fairly well and WERE actually successful (ie: Spanish Revolution, Israeli Kibbutz, etc. etc.)

Anti-Flag – A New Kind Of Army Lyrics 22 years ago
Iwannariot, perhaps you should examine America a little deeper. and perhaps your reasoning as well. Sure, America "has it better" than people in third world countries. we're a capitalist state, and control natural resources, labor and other countries with an iron first. it's common sense that we'd be "better off". But, you should note that America has the highest poverty rates of any industrialized nation, especially child poverty rates. it's easy to say "we" have it better when you're middle class, but it's a little harder when you're starving on the street. America, while having better, extracts a staggering cost on the world. Backing Indonesian genocide and concentration camps in East Timor (hundreds of thousands murdered), estimated 200,000 dead in South American due to U.S. backed death squads and oppressive mass-murdering regimes, estimates as high as 800,000+ dead in Iraq due to harsh U.S. sanctions, extensive detriment to Cuban society from years and years of sanctions....we have money, but at what cost? And does that wealth translate into happiness? Who controls all that wealth? There are many things we should question about America and the answers are not hard to find.

Anti-Flag – Red White And Brainwashed Lyrics 22 years ago
If we really want to start dismantling the power structure of the United States and give it back to the people, than I think we should look at who the REAL enemies are. The government is a tool for Big Business and economic elites. The rich, CEO's, and Corporations hold the real power in the U.S. Whatever they say goes, and the government knows this, and they follow their orders. If they take action that offends the business community, they will immediately stop. Just pay attention to our foreign policy. and to say that you hate "political punk songs" is fucking ridiculous. If you want to hear real fucking punk music, you aren't gonna listen to very many non-political punk bands, because that's kind of a paradox. Punk is dead, as Crass said. Punk is dead because now it's marketable and non-offensive. A major punk ideal was once Anarchy, sometimes referred to as Anarcho-syndacylism. This, essentially, ca be viewed as a "voluntary socialism", or a sort of "bottom to top" power structure, where the people hold power and rule is switched to a community-based, people-run power structure. Punk was founded on politcal thought, and it's a shame people contribute to the pile of shit now referred to as punk.
