Tori Amos – Time (Tom Waits cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
i've read somewhere that it's about death. tori is writing from death's POV as she goes around taking people's lives. but...it still doesn't make total sense.

New Order – Dreams Never End Lyrics 18 years ago
wow this is has got to be one of my top five favorite songs of all time. but these lyrics baffle me. who is "the him"? the lyrics are so dark ("hello, farewell to your love and soul") it sounds like it's about someone growing disillusioned and apathetic about life ie "we'll never know what they are or care", "there's no escape", "a fractured smile that soon dies", perhaps it's chronicling the decay of someone's soul? but that's probably taking it too literally...

The Smashing Pumpkins – 1979 Lyrics 18 years ago
how could he have gotten his license in 1979 if he was 12 at the time? i think everyone pretty much covered the song meaning, which is to say its about being nostalgic about your youth blah blah blah, but the mystery of why he named it 1979 instead of some other year remains a mystery to me. if he wrote it thinking of a memory at a stoplight when he was 18, why would he name it 1979, a year in which he was 12? ahh...this is gonna bug me for awhile. 1979 is just so random.

anyway i suggest everyone go to billy's myspace or livejournal right now. there is alot of stuff about his childhood, family and first marriage and what not. i feel like it's totally given me more insight into his songwriting.

Built to Spill – Fling Lyrics 18 years ago
pretty self explanatory...the only basis of their relationship is sex, but they're both horny and it's good, so they keep going back to each other, even though it never works out. flings are annoying.

Peaches – AA XXX Lyrics 18 years ago
yeah it's "has any volition" and i agree with twerpx, it's about her bra size. she was already looking to get laid while in her training bra.

Peaches – Kick It Lyrics 18 years ago
i'm pretty sure iggy says "fuzzy FOTCH" instead of "spots." although i'm not sure what fotch is. does anyone know if this whole song was improvised? it sounds very much like they just started rhyming off each other.

a love song to a fat person.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Perfect Lyrics 19 years ago
i used to listen to this song thinking it was really sad and melancholy, but now reading the lyrics i'm kinda amused because i realize it's basically about dumping somone and it's all a very elaborate and pretty way to say "let's still be friends." hah.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight Lyrics 19 years ago
this and 1979 are the greatest songs about youth ever. i like it better when billy is more optimistic and nostalgic rather than just angry and cynical like in "zero" or "bullet with butterfly wings".

Paula Cole – I Don't Want To Wait Lyrics 19 years ago
this is sad that everyone associates this song with dawnson's creek now. nice commentary so far too -- i can see real deeping thinking what with all the "DAWSON'S CREEKS" and "PACEY IS SOO HAWT".

anyway back to the song. pretty straightforward song about the effects of war and what it does to you. i see it as one of the descendants of this family looking back on how her ancestors' love was spoiled by war -- he left his wife to raise their daughters all alone, and when he came back he was a jaded bitter man who didn't offer the family any love, hence "it's so hard to be gentle and warm". so this descendent is looking back on all this and telling her significant other "let's not be like this, lets not let how our fathers lived affect our lives."

i haven't heard the song yet, but i'm already loving the lyrics. Let's all celebrate the crushing banality of modern life.

Simple Kid – Staring At The Sun Lyrics 19 years ago
it's the slacker generation's anthem. working your shit job, getting high, pissing your life away. it's like staring at the sun -- you know it's gonna burn your retinas out but you can't stop doing it because you've got some kind of lazy death wish.

The Killers – All These Things That I've Done Lyrics 19 years ago
i'm thinking something along the lines of religion as well. it seems like someone finding religion again after losing faith in it for awhile and becoming embittered by life.

When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
One more son
If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on

He's at the end of his rope here and he's trying to re-connect with god in a moment of despair and desperation (kinda like how when we all get in deep shit we go "please god just do this one thing and i'll be good i promise", even if we might not mean it), hence the "is there room for one more son?" Then he's just telling himself to hang in there and keep having faith even if things aren't getting better.

I wanna stand up, I wanna let go
You know, you know - no you don't, you don't

Again he's angsting about how miserable his life is, how he wants to either let go of life or religion. He doubts if anyone (even god) can relate to his problems, hence "you know...no you don't."
The next couple lines are basically saying how he always aspired to so much more than he turned out and about how life is crappy in general for everyone.

Help me out
Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out, yeah

I think here he's addressing god again, asking Him not to just to sit back and let bad things happen.

These changes ain't changing me
The cold-hearted boy I used to be

I think these lines refer to how he's trying to turn things around in his life and that he's not proud of the things he's done in the past (either being an asshole or losing his religion or both).

I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier

This is my favorite part. It's just so powerful--especially when the choir joins in. Going with the religious theme, this could refer to how he's not a "soldier of god" ie he's never been very religious, or just how he has never been what society considers a "heroic, righteous" type in his life, but that even so he still matters, and he still wants to be a good man.

Overall i would say this song is about redemption and second chances. organized religion has always made me uneasy, but the whole "re-connecting with god" theme was what jumped out at me most.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Black Tongue Lyrics 19 years ago
i'm surprised there aren't more comments on this song! it's one of my faves from them, and the lyrics are so obscure. i've found alot of flaws with the lyrics posted above; for instance i'm pretty sure its "we're high in the bathroom gonna have a pack soon" and not "we'll hide in the bathroom gonna have a packed suit" and "sonny kept his ring on" not "kept his rain on"

there is one interpretation that jump out at me: it's about just being young and dumb and doing dumb shit just because you can still get away with it. These two kids are going through a rebellious phase, hence references to "getting high in the back room gonna have a pack soon" and "prison breaks" and being "on the run." right now they're being "stupid bitches and no good dicks" because it's fun and they can.
