Leonard Cohen – First We Take Manhattan Lyrics 16 years ago
Well, it's supposed to rhyme with "mister", right? And in the Jennifer Warnes version, she definitely sings "sister" (although the rhotic is curiously less expressed in "sister" than in "mister", I'll grant you that).

It's about how you should not give up your dreams, no matter how hard it is, because the perfect opportunity to make them reality may come after all.

What I love about this song is how the music and the surfing metaphor in the lyrics and the implicit meaning of the lyrics all go together. I LOVE the (mostly instrumental) part after the bridge, which is very subdued and the sounds are all soft -- because the perfect wave has come and you've ridden it, and now you're under water for a moment! Then you break through the surface, and the regular rock beat of the song returns. Brilliant.

Oh. Huh. Thanks, that was apparently much easier than I thought... ;)

I also like how the rhythm of the song evokes the notion of standing on the deck of a ship out to sea. However, I've always wondered what exactly a "downeaster" is - a type of ship, or just a local designation? And a "striper" is... a fish, I suppose?

Franz Ferdinand – Lynsey Wells Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think he's sarcastic. I think he's stupefied that somebody could be as positive as Lynsey - which is also why he's trying to find a secret, any secret, to scratch Lynsey's perfection.

And the Dutch lyrics are much much prettier than the English version...

I always thought that this song was somehow about terrorism, though it's really hard to say for sure. I think it's because the Jennifer Warnes version starts with a sample of a news reporter who says (in German): "Regarding the assassins resposible for the attack on the German-Arabian Society in Berlin, the police have made some progress..." before being drowned out by the instrumental intro.

Dire Straits – Brothers In Arms Lyrics 17 years ago
Just read all your comments, and I think it's interesting that although we all agree about the MESSAGE, I've always read the NARRATIVE slightly differently.

I've always thought it was about a soldier comforting a dying *enemy* soldier/freedom fighter. You know, the singer's forces have occupied the "mist-covered mountains", but they come from the lowlands, and he does not believe that he's fighting the good fight anymore. So he tells his enemy that even if he (the enemy) dies now, his people will eventually be able to return and the hatred between the two factions will end.
