A guy uses his wealth, time and energy to give everything to create a life for him and his partner. At first she loves it but then the relationship breaks down. He is embittered by this because he gave her everything and still she walks. He is lonlely and wants someone else to replace her. He has the need to go to extremes. It wants big love.

Kate Bush – How to Be Invisible Lyrics 17 years ago
I guess most of us, at some point or another, wanted to be invisible for a length of time at our choosing. I think this relates mainly to Kate's intense desire not to be in the glare of publicity as some stars are. She really wants her privacy but I'm sure this gets trampled upon occasionally by reporters etc. However as she chooses not be in the spotlight compared to other singers - then she has successfully managed to be invisible.

Therefore if you want to be invisible then you can do have the power to do so. The spell she casts is based on those things - braille, anorak, wallflower, doormat - that we may think are away from the limelight. Instead of being submissive - this is empowering if you choose this lifestyle and want to be left alone.

Kate Bush – Get Out of My House Lyrics 17 years ago
Yet another one of my favourite songs. I believe her body and her life is being compared to a house. A man has overstepped the mark, and aggressively is trying to muscle in onto her life. Possibly, but not necessarily, rape. This man is basically trying to control and dominate her. Not just sexually - but in ever way - emotionally and mentally as well. He wants to bring order to her house and rearrange it the way he wants.

However this woman is not submissive and completely rejects his very blunt and unwanted advances. She aggressively fights back to protect her independence and way of life. She shuts down her heart and emotions to him to make it clear she is not interested. All communications is barred to him. The more he tries - the more stubborn she gets. He tries to tempt her with dreams and kisses but they come with a price as they are devil dreams and cold kisses. At the end she prevails and she keeps her freedom to be who she wants and choose who she wants to let into her life.

A great and completely bonkers song:)

Kate Bush – King of the Mountain Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about being released after becoming trapped after finding fame. Elvis became hugely rich and successful but he was unhappy. His wealth and all his priceless junk didn't bring him happiness. This compares to Kane in Citizen Kane - who was also very rich but unhappy. On his deathbed he looked back to simpler times (riding on his sledge as a child) which he couldn't go back to life. However, Kate sees death as positive and she believes the soul is released from the stress of life and complications of modern society and goes to a better place.

Elvis is released and he becomes part of nature. He is still King but he is King of the Mountain instead of Rock and Roll. A mountain is a contrast to the screaming crowds in Las Vegas. A mountain he away from people but he has finally found happiness within himself.

The house is whistling because the door is open as Elvis is no longer there. It represents his mortality on earth and what he has left behind. It's an empty shell and Elvis should represent more than Gold discs on a wall, money and all those ridiculous rumours of people who can accept he has gone.

Kate Bush – Egypt Lyrics 17 years ago
Having been to Egypt once - I too would question why someone would be obsessed with it. However yes I think this person is - as many people do get obsessed either by their own country or about the myth or reality of another country.

No doubt, Egypt does have amazing history which has fascinated many people around the world for centuries. Many of the tombs are still there which are many centuries (even thousands of years) older than anything comparable in Europe. And because of this, the desert, the Nile etc - there is a sense of mystery and romance here which this person has fallen in love with.

Funny how she doesn't mention the street-traders hassling for custom though. Or the Cairo pollution. Or the Mummy Tummy;)

Kate Bush – Experiment IV Lyrics 17 years ago
Another one of my favourite Kate Bush songs and a great video too which has Hugh Laurie and Dawn French in.

Clearly this is about the powers that be (See Army Dreamers and Breathing) doing bad things again. This time they have taken something beautiful and creative like music which is meant for pleasure - and turned it into a weapon that can kill.

However - having something so extreme - which could make you feel like falling in love etc - will end up killing you. So like be warying of helping the government and anyone who wants to distort the good things in life because it will end up costing your own life. The experiment goes wrong but the guys at the top will get away without being harmed.

I guess music can be a metaphor for people generally. A child is usually innocent but bad parenting or/and government propaganda can turn that child into a criminal or a soldier propping corrupt regimes. They can do violence onto others. Basically you reap what you sow.

Kate Bush – Deeper Understanding Lyrics 17 years ago
Interesting how Kate, often in her songs, has a disconnect between her characters and those around them. They are looking for something deeper (e.g. All We Ever Look For) or misunderstanding (e.g. The Big Sky - 'you never really understood me, you never really tried). This person can't find deeper understanding with those around them - so they have found it on a computer.

Kate Bush – Cloudbusting Lyrics 17 years ago
Yes - in the song and video - Kate is playing the part of the son, Peter Reich. I believe it's about being positive, having courage and becoming an adult.

The father is a brave scientist who gets put away because of his rain-machine. The relationship with his son was very close and his son looked up to him. His father was trying to do something good in the world and face up to those in power. To make a new invention you have to struggle against those in power. To do this you need inner-strength, confidence and courage.

As a contrast, the son hides anything that he loves but finds dangerous like his yo-yo. Looking down from the hill from a safe vantage point - he can't understand why his father is a threat to the powers that be. So whilst his father was, in his opinon, on top of the world in terms of greatest - the people in power crawl up below and drag his father back down to earth and imprison him.

Nevertheless his son won't forget the inspiration his father has given him. Although he hid his yo-yo because he thought it was dnagerous when he was younger, he has also put away his childhood and is now ready to grow up and face the world. Therfore instead of hiding away and forgetting his father - his is either going to carry on his father's work or tell the world about his father's work. This will take courage. Therefore he is coming out (from whatever he is hiding behind).

This song is based on Wilhelm Reich arrest. As a scientist he tried to measure the male orgasm and believed this was a type of energy present in all life forms which he called "orgone.". He built cloudbusters which he belived could manipulate streams of orgone energy to produce rain. His 280 acre estate in Maine was called Orgonon. He was banned from orgone-therapy equipment across a state line and was jailed for 2 years when he failed to do so. He died in prison.

Kate Bush – Breathing Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this is about the total reliant relationship an unborn baby has with it's mother AND the relationship we all have with those in power. The backdrop is nuclear war and having such a bomb go off. Instead of dying immediately - the pregnant woman here is in the fallout zone and it is the radiation that will eventually (probably fairlly quickly) kill her.

The woman has no choice but to breathe in the deadly air and thus she will kill herself and her baby. The baby is totally reliant on her. Similarly those in power are the mother to the rest of us. We are, in effect the baby, who are totally reliant on them for our survival. And like the mother - they have unwittingly killed us - their baby. We can presume that no democratic country would purposefully kill it's population - but can assume it could get caught up in a nuclear war which they were partially responsible for and thus sealing the fate of it's people.

However Kate sees herself (the Mother), her baby and us - as being different from those in power. They - and the ones who they are fighting the nuclear way - are the fools. She begs for clean air and sanity but it's too late. The powers have caused Mutually Assured Destruction upon themselves. Therefore their people and themselves will die - along with the mother and unborn child.

Instead they should realised that we all - us and our percieved enemies breathe and rely on the same air. Similarly this could be updated to climate change. If you only think about yourself and not think about the bigger picture or the damage your actions will cause - then you may bring about your own destruction.

Kate Bush – Blow Away (For Bill) Lyrics 17 years ago
Yes this is directly about the death of 21 year old Bill Duffield, her lighting director, who was killed in an accident during her concert in Poole on 2nd April 1979. She held a benefit concert on 12 May, with Peter Gabriel and Steve Harley at Hammersmith Odeon for his family. Some people say this is why she never toured again.

Also I think the song is about being positive about death. At first - her reaction is that it is such a waste that he and his music will be seperated and blown away. However another view is that when we see the light - our souls - want to go to heaven and don't want to remain her on Earth as it's too late. They can't be dragged back to Earth by their family - so instead of mourning for too long - it is better to let go and celebrate a life and believe that they are in a better place and having a good time - surrounded by the things they love. In Bill's case this would be music. And in this heaven - there are plenty of dead singers who are going to put on a concert for Bill to light.

Kate Bush – Be Kind to My Mistakes Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of my favourite Kate Bush songs - and particularly underated. It's not on any of her main studio albums but it was on the soundtrack of the 1986 film Castaway starring Oliver Reed and Amanda Donahue. This was based on a real story about a middle aged man in his late 40s advertising for a 'wife' to share a year on a desert island. He gets together with a woman 20 years younger who answers his ad - and they both go to this desert island off the coast of Australia and almost starve to death. According to IMdB - Kate Bush was actually asked initially to star in this film but she declined. Instead she wrote this song.

Therefore the song lyrics are pretty straightforward - about trusting someone who you don't really know. They are both looking for adventure but they don't know if their personalities will match or clash. Therefore she is asking him to be kind to her potential 'mistakes' that he might take offense to. I think this can be taken as her personality generally - and - is vice versa. She also wants to be kind to any of his mistakes - or habits. If they are on this desert island then they are going to have to rely on each other and not lose their tempers as their survival depends on their cooperation.

Also she is hoping that this adventure will be love as her heart is needing. However as they don't know each other - they both may conceal secrets and certain baggage that they bring which may only come out later - if at all. Overall - going on this trip might be a big mistake in itself. So if she finds that she cannot love him as his wife - then he should be 'kind' in not being too hard on her as it was a gamble. Overall - I guess the world would be a better place if we were all kinder to each other mistakes.

Kate Bush – Babooshka Lyrics 17 years ago
Whilst most people would have little sympathy for the man as he is, or seems like he is, cheating on his wife - I believe Kate wrote it thinking that the wife was the manipulative one here. Her husband loves her but it was her who went cold on him. Yes - relationships can't keep the same passion/lust as the beginning but they can deepen over time into real love. It's a shame the woman here didn't put enough energy into her relationship in an open honest way as she did into tricking her husband. Their relationship has all but died and this stunt has only backfired and made them both seem like fools.

It's a nice simple song - a love song from a mother to her son. However I can't help when Bertie is a stroppy teenager at school he's going to be somewhat embarrassed by this by his mates. Thanks Mum!

Kate Bush – Big Stripey Lie Lyrics 17 years ago
I would guess this is the difficulties in a relationship which is being compared to a jungle and animals. The Lie is treated like an actual animal in itself. It's a big predator but it's camoflaged. Kind of like a tiger. If you don't look out, that thing that has been skulking in the undergrowth is going to jump out from behind and get you.

Presuming that the lie is coming from a man who has been cheating on his partner. He tells her that he only wants to be good to her and that he wouldn't hurt her. He might swear on such things like the Bible that he is honest and he might even proclaim in a pompous manner (who me?) - that he would never cheat. Nevertheless he is a lying hypocrite.

He uses other lies/animals out there to distract from the big stripey lie. Nevertheless the little lies/waves will soons scatter if she sees the truth and realise what he is doing.

Kate Bush – Army Dreamers Lyrics 17 years ago
I would say it's about certain young men who only join the army because they have no other opportunities in life as they grew up poverty. No doubt they are keen to 'see the world' but really they are pawns to the politicians and generals who send them to wars. They know little about the situation in which they find themselves - the chicken with the fox. They don't stand much chance. It's waste when people killed in wars which they have little, if any, say - and - if they really should have had the opportunity to chose a path more appropriate to their dreams. It's shame that wars should only be fought by those who clamber for such conflict.

Kate Bush – And Dream of Sheep Lyrics 17 years ago
Whilst this woman is in danger of drowning she has two conflicting thoughts. One is trying to stay awake - hence wishing she had a radio - otherwise if she falls asleep she might drown. The other voice actually welcomes death as she is so exhausted and afraid that a peaceful death in her sleep is preferable to the long struggle for survival in the cold harsh sea. If she sleeps and dies then she believes she will be taken somewhere more comforting.

Kate Bush – All We Ever Look For Lyrics 17 years ago
Humans searching for the meaning of life but failing. It's pointless, really but we still can't help ourselves. There must some reason why we are here?
