It is a great song. I saw him do it live last year, and I am most likely going to see it again this year. there are all sorts of satirical goodies and clever tidbits in the telling of this song. Guthrie in general is a superb showman, and can tell a story like none other. If you listen to him on stage, he embodies charm. Not just for the Massacree, either, but for all things. |

I really identify with this song. This is a throwback to everyone's childhood. It's hard to put into words, but each of these situations is like something similar that has happened to all of us when we were young. To me, the song is about taking risks and not knowing the outcome. The secret is split up six ways - the answer's out there, but you have no hope of knowing it. This is a jaw-dropping song. The effects at 1:50 in the album version in the song sound like guns. My favorite line is "you leave the church and taste the air in your lungs" - it shows how sweet life can taste even when you take flack from uncertainty. |
