Kings of Convenience – Boat Behind Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is excellent. It fuses south american and european musical styles very deftly, and the catchy beat makes it one of those songs i know i will keep coming back to.

Miami Horror – Sometimes Lyrics 14 years ago
I really enjoyed this song. It has this oddly grandiose feeling about it, as if it puts everything into some vast perspective.
Most of all, this song makes me think of my friends, and leaving them behind. It even makes me a bit sad.

Another gem to come out of Australia.

Jack White – Another Way To Die Lyrics 15 years ago
I love the sound of this song. As radiogoogoo said, it's so gritty and rough, perfect for quantum of solace. I also think this song is a little bit badass, larger than life. It's a great way for Bond to make his entrance in the opening credits.

I also think the really good use of the kit in the background during the chorus gives the song a driven feeling, of moving forward, even running away. It's perfect.

Yves Klein Blue – Polka Lyrics 15 years ago
i actually have to disagree with the drug addict interpretation. i think its really about the musician's lifestyle (which may involve drugs, but i don't think that is the focus of the song). his life (the band's life) has been about breaking away from the mould that they were supposed to fill (boring forty-somethings). by making a band, they chose the neon-death lifestyle over the middle-class lifestyle they were supposed to have.

the song is probably an allegorical about drugs as well, but i wouldn't dismiss the above interpretation too quickly. these boys all went to my school a few years ago (Brisbane Grammar School). It's basically a school that gets you a free ride into the middle-class/upper middle-class lifestyle if you want it. they are talking about how most of their friends have taken that course, and they were some of the only ones to choose a different (less boring?) life.

Eminem – We Made You Lyrics 15 years ago
an elite song. eminem is back, and this song is him telling everyone that he is the man. when he says "i am the only one for you" he means he's the only rock star who understands his audience (white middle-class suburbanite boys). he is really smart and this song is the beginning of another chapter of eminem making fun of us all :)

Echo and the Bunnymen – The Killing Moon Lyrics 15 years ago
i think its actually about a cursed murderer. strange theory i know but here's how i think it works:

First verse: the vocalist is the killer, somehow cursed to commit a murder every blue moon ("the killing time/ unwillingly mine) and is talking about how he met a girl (i'm just assuming its a girl: he could be gay...) who will fall for him, yet he knows that it is the time for him to kill again, and though the force of their love draws him to her, he realizes that the love cannot last because of his curse. 'Too late to beg you' suggests that the killer plans to go through with the romance anyway, meaning that he is willing to kill the girl in return for a brief love.

chorus: this is tricky, and is open to at least two interpretations. In one, the vocalist is taking the perspective of an observer looking in on the fateful romance, saying that the killer is always fated to kill, even when he doesnt want to ("fate up against your will"). it is suggested that the curse is the dominating component of the killer's life ("through the thick and thin"). He also seems to give an ominous opinion of the killer. Whereas in the first verse, the killer seems to be torn whether or not to love and kill or never love at all, in the chorus the vocalist tells us that the killer had always resolved to wait, have the romance and perform the murder.

In the alternative interpretation, the killer could be talking about the girl's fate being against her will (although she may not know this). Then, "through the thick and thin" might mean that her whole life was always fated to end with the murder. "he will wait until..." could refer to a third party who also loves the girl, who doesn't yet have a chance with the girl and possibly never will.

the second verse is about the romance the killer experiences with the girl, and about how magical and rich it was. They kiss "cruelly" because the killer knows that the more he loves her the more it will hurt him when he kills her. "The killing moon/ will come to soon" shows that the killer doesn't want the love to end, though he knows it must.

presumably, the third verse (which is the same as the first) is supposed to be reinterpreted as the moment of the kill. instead of the beginning of the romance, this is the last moment of their love: the killing time has come, and the killer holds the girl in his arms as he murders her. "Too late to beg you" might mean that he is already to close to the kill to beg her to leave, and gives a sense of fatefulness and finality.

this is the first meaning that occured to me as i listened to the song, and after seeing it used in donnie darko, i think it relates to the movie really well with this interpretation. for example, donnie can be said to 'kill' gretchen because she dies in the tangent universe that he started, whereas in the normal universe that he chooses for her and everyone else at the end of the film, she lives. it could also be said that the 'killing time' came for donnie at the end, that it was his fate to die, which he escaped at the start of the movie.

i know there are other interpretations but i like this one :)

Tears for Fears – Head Over Heels Lyrics 15 years ago
a song well used in donnie darko. the song seems to be a collection of thoughts about someone that he just realized he loves but knows he can't have because its too late for whatever reason. he leaves a few sentences unfinished, giving it the feeling that he is trying to suppress some of his thoughts of affection towards this person because he knows it will never happen. sad song really, but full of emotions.

Gary Jules – Mad World (Tears for Fears cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
wow i never considered the first verse in the way you did, as a funeral. great interpretation! you've completely changed my mind about that verse :)

the only place i reckon you got it wrong was in the second verse, about the child. I think the first four lines of that verse really tell it all.
'Made to feel the way that every child should' really sums it up. The first part of that verse really says that every child (read: every person) should be able to feel safe and happy and wanted (happy birthday: on your birthday you are the centre of attention). 'Children waiting for the day they feel good' could be read as people waiting...

the second half of that verse is a bit harder to work out. i think you may have gotten it right, but it might mean that he longs for his childhood (the good times), when the biggest obstacles were things like your first day of school, or trying to do well in class etc

so maybe the first half of that verse is using childhood as a general metaphor for life, and the second half is referring directly to the artist's longing for childhood to return, because adult life is too difficult.

the chorus is pretty hard to decipher, but i guess it does reflect his alienation as you say; how he finds it 'hard to take' or to understand adult life, therefore causing a longing for childhood.

hope this helped :)

hey does anyone remember how Joy Division was used in Donnie Darko? I think this song just adds to that. Donnie's love tore him from his family, girlfriend etc.
He laughs ironically at the moment of his death at the end... perhaps he found the cure for a broken heart..

Iron & Wine – The Trapeze Swinger Lyrics 15 years ago
sorry for the double post but

wow Nightlark, i think you just about hit every point there. i can see you put a lot of thought into that. good on you.

the only thing that i can really add is that 'someone save temptation' might mean that some person who didn't make it through the pearly gates gave up on heaven, and graffitied that there as a protest. in his (or her) view, sin and temptation are a part of human nature, and our struggle to rid of ourselves of them in order to attain heaven is a thoughtless one: why not just be true to ourselves? why do we need paradise when we have our fond memories (even those of the objects that tempted us out of heaven)?

i think this also links back into the song nicely, because he was 'tempted' by the girl, and he gave in to it, and this graffiti could mean that he doesn't regret having given in. he wants to 'save temptation' because his memories of the girl (the object of temptation) are a part of him now, and he doesn't want to give it up to get into heaven. hence, his fond memories of the girl are more important to him than eternal paradise, which is a very strong emotion.

Iron & Wine – The Trapeze Swinger Lyrics 15 years ago
This is my favourite verse:
"
Please, remember me
Fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then
They went on to say
That the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti
Like "We'll meet again"
And "Fuck the man"
And "Tell my mother not to worry"
And angels with their great
Handshakes
Were always done in such a hurry"

i really found those lines about graffiti on the pearly gates to be some of the most eloquent poetry in the song. It really says something that, according to this song, even people living in paradise feel sad and angry enough to leave a message, simply because of the past. To me that really says something about human nature: how amazing the past seems after a very long time (not good or bad, just amazing).

The line: "We're always done in such a hurry" says so many things as well. Like how brief a human life is, how quickly we go through our emotions, how we rarely take the time to slow down, to stop hurrying...

The Shins – Australia Lyrics 16 years ago
i think i agree with hrom and saroldine. this song does say something about a person trying to be religious to cover up past experiences. it makes more sense in relation to the whole album. consider 'a comet appears'. it often points out the hollowness of religion: how we use religion to make 'sinking stones fly'. it also fits in with 'sleeping lessons': 'and if the old gods still offend/ theyve got nothing left on which we depend', which points out that we dont need our 'gods' whoever they may be.
this whole album, like all its predecessors, just... works.
