Harry Chapin – Cats In The Cradle Lyrics

You are so funny mchabot...I will put my Chapin trivia knowledge head to head with yours any day of the week. Harry is my favorite artist and no I didn't Google it. This reply was my first post on this site back in 2008 and I thought I was replying to the song and not to the comment. |

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – My Back Pages Lyrics

Ok, probably has comments in the Dillon section (this is a Bob Dillon song for those that might not know). I personally love Dillon' music but hate his voice...the guys give this one great life! I love protest music and this one grounds us in how we should approach protest...don't get lost in ideals before you know what you stand for.
"My guard stood hard when abstract threats, too noble to neglect,
deceived me into thinking I had something to protect." |

Peter, Paul and Mary – Wedding Song (There Is Love) Lyrics
| 14 years ago
|
Great song...was played at my wedding and my mother's wedding (I wanted that particular piece to be carried on). Absolutely great song about the beauty of marriage. The story goes that Noel Paul Stookey wrote this for Peter Yarrow's wedding. He counts it as the first song he wrote upon his conversion to Christianity.
"Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again." |

Wow, not much comment on the PPM songs...shocking! We have to believe in the next generation and leave them something we can be proud of...very appropriate song in this day and age. |

Jackson Browne – Doctor My Eyes Lyrics

For me this song has always been about loss of innocence that comes with age..."was I unwise to leave them open for so long?"...it is something we all lose over time but don't realize it's lost until we look back. |

James Taylor – Copperline Lyrics

i always loved these lines:
One time I saw my daddy dance
Watched him moving like a man in a trance
He bought it back from the war in France
reminds me of being a kid looking on while my parents danced in the living room |

Simon and Garfunkel – The Sound of Silence Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
what the h***!? No comments!? I am both honored and applaud that I am the first comment. I think this song is a great comment on the state of our country and world:
Fools, said I, you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach
Take my arms that I might reach you
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed
In the wells of silence |

Simon and Garfunkel – Save The Life Of My Child Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
ok, I got to do this. I love Simon and Garfunkel but never really cared for this song until...one night on high school overnight trip to some conference or another i couldn't sleep in the hotel room and i was listening to this on my headset and i thought i heard something so i listened and listened probably 20 times that night...DO IT...and in one of those funky interludes you will hear the intro to sounds of silence ("hello darkness my old friend"). This has been well over 10 years ago but right after i found no mention of this anywhere on the internet...quite a little gem and I will always have a soft spot for this song now. |

Arlo Guthrie – Alice's Restaurant Lyrics

as i posted for Harry Chapin's "There Was Only One Choice" 16 min songs don't get airplay save Arlo once a year...great song and as you may or may not notice from the Chapin reference i love songs that make a social political statement |

Coven – One Tin Soldier (Original Caste cover) Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
wow! I really thought this song would have great comments...I guess it is a little dated. It is my second favorite song of all time.
My 2 cent:
It is about the greed and hatred in this world (the valley folk) who lash out at their neighbors (the mountain people) and kill for what they see as a "just cause" only to find that there is no just cause to take a life (peace on earth was all it said). There are many parallels to today's world...I have seen parallels done to 9/11, the war in Iraq, etc.. But this was originally written in the Vietnam era. As for the tin soldier I always took the tin soldier as he goes into battle shiny and pristine and comes out bent and tarnish, but I would be interested to hear others opinions. |

favorite song of all time b/c i used to dance to it as a kid...one of my earliest memories...and I subscribe to the belief that you can't change a favorite song
my favorite line: "I seek to cure what's deep inside frightened of this thing that I've become."

Kenny Loggins – Return To Pooh Corner Lyrics

I always saw this as an innocence lost song...he wrote the original at 18 about high school graduation...the "Return" was released many years later and really puts things into perspective |

Kenny Loggins – Conviction Of The Heart Lyrics

this is my favorite of his it's on my mix CD "Songs of Conviction and Hope" which i think describes it perfectly...so many songs that make a statement forget to include the hope that things can be better |

Jackson Browne – Song For Adam Lyrics

it is very hard when you hear a friend from your youth commits suicide...i always liked this song but didn't really give it due respect until i got a call from my parents one day at college (several years back now) and was told that the first boy i ever slow danced with had taken his own life...that was one of the darkest days of my life not because we had been so close but because we had been so much alike...it really hit home and this song has never been the same for me since |

Jackson Browne – The Load Out/Stay Lyrics

This man is great in concert...and this song captures that spirit...
But when that last guitar's been packed away
You know that I still want to play
So just make sure you got it all set to go
Before you come for my piano |

Billy Joel – The Downeaster 'Alexa' Lyrics

In an interview I saw in more recent years it was done on Billy's fishing boat...he talked about how he would have been a fisherman if not for music. Based on that interview I have always seen this a deeply personal song for him. Just my 2 cent. |

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – See The Changes Lyrics

My favorite CSN/CSNY song EVER...I have an emotional response when i hear it...
I think it is about love...real love not fairy tale love. To love some one is hard sometimes especially through all the changes of life and time and you can never quite catch up to that perfect pure love no matter how close you come to it |

Harry Chapin – Vacancy Lyrics

Ok, I think I have heard just about every Harry Chapin song (even some unreleased ones...go "pigeon run"!), but for some reason or another this will always be my favorite. And what's up with so many of Harry's released songs missing from this site!? Stranger with the Melodies, November Rains, Northwest 222, We Were Three, etc... |

Harry Chapin – There Only Was One Choice Lyrics
| 15 years ago
|
It's a shame that 16 minute songs never get airplay...a great epic song...and can be seen as prophetic:
*****
So I stride down sunny streets and the band plays back my song
They're applauding at my shadow long after I am gone
Should I hold this wistful notion that the journey is worthwhile
Or tiptoe cross the chasm with a song and a smile
*****
Truly a man dealing with his own self image and mortality. |

Harry Chapin – Cats In The Cradle Lyrics
|
It is always amazing to me that the majority of people only know such a great artist and story teller for a song (the words at least) that he didn't even write. His wife wrote it as a poem about her ex and their children. Harry put it to music and now is universally know for it. Check out his "Stranger with the Melodies"..."I gave her the music son, she gave me the words. Together we'd write the kind of songs the angels must have heard."
Care of one of Harry's biggest fans who wasn't even alive when died. |
