Steely Dan – Rikki Don't Lose That Number Lyrics
| 4 years ago
|
I always thought "number" was a reference to a MJ joint. As in the Neil Young song "roll another number for the road". But the Rikki Ducornet theory makes a lot of sense. I'm going with that one.
A side note: I saw The Dan perform this song when it was their hit off the newly (at the time) released Pretzel Logic album in 1974 at Rob Gym on the UC Santa Barbara campus. It was one of the last concerts they did before they took 20 years off from touring until they started again in 1993. A very memorable show. |

Enough has already been said/speculated about the meaning of this song. No doubt a classic, great song that I never get tired of. My comment has to do with the use of it in the movie "The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty". One of my favorite scenes in movie making history. No, I'm not saying it's one of the great movies of all time, but the scene where Kristin Wiig plays the song to Stiller...awesome! It's perfect. A scene I have seen over a dozen times. If you haven't seen the movie, it's worth it for that scene alone. A good, not great movie. A great, not good song. |

This song was unique in 2 ways. It's the only song they did that they didn't write (Duke Ellington & Bubber Miley 1927) and the only instrumental they did. |

Actually, the lyrics don't claim Geronimo was shot in battle. They say "I heard from passing renegades Geronimo was dead. He'd been laying down his weapons when they filled him full of lead". Not necessarily what happened, just what the passing renegades were saying. A small point but a point worth mentioning. |

That's so funny. The 2 songs you mentioned are not very well known but also my 2 favorite EJ songs. Another one of my favorites, which is also not well known is 'Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters'. |

Michael Franks – Popsicle Toes Lyrics
|
I agree with most of the previous posters, but I think Popsicle Toes is exactly that, cold toes. It is why he wrote "You're so brave to expose ALL those popsicle toes". If he meant nipples, I don't think he would have wrote ALL.
Pulchritude means beauty, loveliness etc.
Tierra del Fuego is at the southern tip of Argentina, so probably toes.
North America= Breasts or torso?
Miss Pennsylvania? Not sure what that means.
Brazil has gotta be breasts. If you look at it on a map, the way it is shaped will make you think breasts.
Panama I believe might mean clitoris. Again, look at Panama on a map. What female part comes to mind?
Anyway, great song by a great artist. |

I'm certain you're wrong. The song is called simply "Superman" by all accounts. I don't think it matters though. |

The Beach Boys – In My Room Lyrics

In 1990, Brian wrote,
"I also enjoyed producing 'In My Room'. There is a story behind this song. When Dennis, Carl and I lived in Hawthorne as kids, we all slept in the same room. One night I sang the song 'Ivory Tower' to them and they liked it. Then a couple of weeks later, I proceeded to teach them both how to sing the harmony parts to it. It took them a little while, but they finally learned it. We then sang this song night after night. It brought peace to us. When we recorded 'In My Room', there was just Dennis, Carl and me on the first verse...and we sounded just like we did in our bedroom all those nights. This story has more meaning than ever since Dennis' death." |

Elton John – Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy Lyrics

I have to admit, when I first heard this song, I thought it was the "Hershey Highway" thing. It was right after I found out EJ was gay. But I then remembered Bernie Taupin (who isn't gay) wrote all of his lyrics.
I don't understand why people get so mad or offended or whatever,(and even want to censor) when others make childish comments. Who cares?
Anyway, an excellent song.
IMO, this was his last album that was really good, even though it wasn't as good as his previous hit albums, Madman, Honkey, Yellow Brick Road, etc. I think he kinda went downhill after CF&TBDC. Maybe my tastes just changed. I did buy Rock of the Westies, which was the one that followed Captain, but that was the last one of EJ's albums I purchased. |

Cat Stevens – Wild World Lyrics

I didn't intend to reply to what ALWAYSYOUR4EVER wrote so I re-wrote it here:
Oops, did it again!
Well I hate to spoil the party, but when he appeared on the "Live at the BBC" television show in 1971 (I just watched tonight) he played several of his hits. After he played Moonshadow and Tuesday's Dead he said:
"I'd like to sing a song now that I wrote I think before I tried to make um...a second comeback and uh... I think uh..., I think I'm basically talking about myself in this one. This is called Wild World".
And then he proceeds to play a great version of a great song. Sorry, it isn't about Patty D'Arbanville. Straight from the cats mouth.
An interesting part of the "Live at the BBC" show was, several time during the show, they would start a song and then he would stop and instruct Alun Davies to re-tune his guitar. And then they would start the song over. I'm sure he was the only one in the building who could hear that Davies guitar was not tuned perfectly. I thought that was interesting. |

Jackson Browne – Late for the Sky Lyrics

First, one of the best songs ever written from the best songwriter of all time.
I always took the "Late For The Sky" to mean, if you look at the album cover, it seems to be late in the evening based on the way the house looks. It's dark and you can see the lights are on through the window and the streetlight is on, but the sky seems to be daytime. So, it's late for what the sky looks like. I'm not sure what that means, but that's how I always took it.
As far as the album cover is concerned, it is my favorite cover of all time or GOAT (Greatest Of All Time), which is why, in 1980, I had my watercolor artist girlfriend (GF at the time) paint me the album cover (It was a birthday present). The painting is quite remarkable. The cover was inspired by the painting by Rene Magritte (1898-1967) called "L'Empire des lumières". Another photo from nature photographer David Muench called "I think it's Ohio." was used for the sky. All of these can be seen here on my snapfish album page. There is an obvious resemblance in the photos and paintings.

R.E.M. – Try Not To Breathe Lyrics
|
I don't think it's about suicide but a cry for help. It's almost impossible to kill yourself by holding your breath.
"I will hold my breath until all these shivers subside"
Also, I don't get why some of you are convinced that it is a woman. Based on what? Definitely an old person though.
A good song from a great album...but, as usual, not really deep lyrics from Stipe. I think he is overrated as a song writer. Couldn't carry Jackson Brown's lunch box as far as meaningful lyrics! Check out any song on "Late For The Sky" if you want deep, meaningful lyrics.
Cheers! |

Cat Stevens – How Can I Tell You Lyrics

I always thought his lyrics were "I need to know you, need to feel my arms around you
Feel my arms surround you, like a sea around a shore". Surround not around in the second line. A small point but worth pointing out. |

Jackson Browne – The Pretender Lyrics

Is the line "The junk man pounds his fender" referring to Jimi Hendrix? His guitar of choice was the Fender Strat. I've been wondering that since the 70s. |
