Ministry – She's Got A Cause Lyrics 1 year ago
Given who we're listening to, this could well be a literal BDSM scenario. However, I suspect Uncle Al and I have had a similar experience: long term relationship with a narcissistic sociopath. They are experts at eroding one's boundaries unnoticeably until they're gone entirely. Look up the "boiled frog" scenario as an analogy. These people live to be served and have zero empathy or concern for anyone, even so called loved ones — because they cannot process love. You find yourself alone with no support network and worked to the point where you cannot even trust your own senses to help you make decisions. There are literally programs for survivors of the woman in this song, and the effects they're addressing are nothing short of PTSD.

The Mamas & the Papas – Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon) Lyrics 4 years ago
As someone who moved from NY to FL and later to LA, I get this song. New Yorkers are wonderful people, but not so open to strangers on the street, so the city can seem dark and cold. In LA, as late as 2008, I'd always end up in conversations waiting in check out lines. My initial reaction was often to wonder suspiciously why someone was talking to me. In NYC, you can complete the entire transaction without even a word between you and the cashier.

I know there's a lot more to this song than just a general comparison of the openness of people in two cities, but it hits strongly with "at first so strange to feel so friendly". Given NYC in the '70s and LA during the hippie period, I'm sure that difference was markedly more extreme.

Strawberry Switchblade – Since Yesterday Lyrics 5 years ago
I've always thought this was the final collapse a struggling relationship. They were long-time friends who became romantic, and the breakup threatens to take the everything down with it. She (the singer) is just trying to reclaim the friendship they had before.

"Just close your eyes and then remember
The thoughts you've locked away
When tomorrow comes you'll wish
You had today"

It wasn't always bad, and you shouldn't carry forward only negative memories.

"And as we sit here alone
Looking for a reason to go on
It's so clear that all we have now
Are our thoughts of yesterday"

Things have changed, and we don't feel the same about each other anymore. Maybe it was a mistake to fall in love.

"If you're still there when it's all over
I'm scared I'll have to say
That a part of you has gone
Since yesterday"

I'd like to believe we can remain friends, but you're distant/elsewhere. Even if we are friends, it won't be like it was.

"Well, maybe this could be the ending
With nothing left of you
A hundred wishes couldn't say
I don't want to"

You're going to discard everything we've experienced over one part proving to be incompatible. I just wish we could salvage the friendship we had, but it looks like that's not going to happen.

"It's so clear that all we have now
Are thoughts of yesterday"

Acceptance that they "can never go home again".

Cher – Believe Lyrics 13 years ago
The part of this song that will redeem or permanently condemn it for me is this (I do not like the Vocoder effect and agree that she's way more talented than this song would indicate) ...

Is she saying there is a voice in her head saying *she* is not strong enough, and she's trying to overcome it? Or is she telling the guy (who's going to "be the lonely one") he's not strong enough?

If she's fighting some inner battle for self-esteem, then the song's pretty cool. If she's playing psych games trying to undermine a guy who's obviously decided to leave her, then it's garbage.
