Modest Mouse – Trailer Trash/Ice on the Sheets Lyrics 12 years ago
In a nutshell I think it's about beating yourself up over missed opertunities and what your life could of been compared with how it's turned out. The guy in the lyrics clearly just want's to run away from it all. Basicly it's about being a fuck up :p

Neutral Milk Hotel – Ghost Lyrics 12 years ago
I agree with everyone on this page, and I liked what vivalapandabear said about not being afraid because you're never erased from history. This song is definately possitive though in response to something that was posted on page 1. It's followed by untitled which is a celebration of life. Those two songs for me together are the best on the record.

ps I love the way he delivers the line "and she was born in a bottle rocket, 1929". I think mangum referances a bottle rocket because Anne Frank was born into a time where things were about to build up. The wall street crash happened in 1929. During the folowing years the Nazi started gaining more power as people turned to extreame politics in desperate times. The more people who joined/supported the nazis was like pressure being added to a bottle rocket, untill eventually it went off. World War II and the holocaust. It was just unfortunate that Anne was born at this time.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 Lyrics 12 years ago
Actually after studying the lyrics of little birds more closely this song appears to have alot more crossovers than I thought and I'm really way of on my interpretation. This song encounters alot of different characters encountered throughout in the aeroplane over the sea.

The first verse seems to be the narrator adressing his father. This father I believe is the one mentioned in the King of carrot flowers part 1. The king of carrot flowers part one starts off by looking back on childhood memories. "when you were young you were the king of carrot flowers". as the song progesses the song gets much darker. finally ending with the verse "and your mum would drink untill she was no longer thinking, and Dad would dream of all the different ways to die, each one a little more than he could dare to try". The family is clearly broken up by this stage probably due to the events of the song little birds, when the father finds out one of his sons his homosexual. (I believe this homosexual son is the king of carrot flowers). this first verse then i believe is the King of carrot flowers brother singing to His father after seemingly forgiving him so beating his brother's brains in. He wants his dad to find a new lover and be happy again, Just like when his two sons were younger, and the only thing the king of carrot flowers had to worry about was being the king of carrot flowers. The father just wants to be young again or to have no worries, it seems he struggles to deal with the concept of time passing by.

The second verse I believe is about Goldaline which who heard is one half of a siamese twin. the end of Oh comely refers to Goldaline, and just like in the end of Oh comely I believe the narrator in this verse is the sister of goldaline (the other half of the siamese twin). I believe though as goldaline is refered to as blister, an operation has taken place where Goldaline has sacrafised her life in order for the narrator to live. I believe the narrator is much older and has found out about goldaline, and sudenly this big "blister" on her side makes so much sence. I believe the narrator is a only child and longs for the companionship of a sister ( goldaline) or a brother. maybe she dreams about her and goldaline and a brother all being one happy family. The last few lines of this verse I believe refers to the teasing that goes on between siblings and how the narrator longs for this.

The third verse I believe is mangum singing to Anne Frank, Mangum said that he often had dreams abot Anne. "and in my dreams you're alive and your crying" this line always gives me a very stark image. A woman who was in a concentration camp with Anne said how she remembered Anne looking on at some gypsies waiting outside the gas chamber and crying uncontrollably. This verse it's clear that Mangum has had dreams of being in love with Anne. The way he sings "I'll love you for the rest of your life, when you're ready" is very strange and hearbreaking because obviously Anne is already dead, so mangum is promising something that is impossible.

The third verse is the same narrator as the first verse, he singing to his brother (the king of carrot flowers) who was killed by his father due to his homosexuality. in this verse the narrator creates the imagaery of his father butchering his brother in a very gruesome way. This verse gives me the image of the narrator rushing over the his murdered brother in a last ditch attempt to save him. "push the pieces in place, Make your smile sweet to see, don't you take this away, I'm still wanting my face on your cheek". I've also heard this verse is about a friend of Mangum's who's brother commited suiced. This leads me to think this particular real life story is told through the imagery presented in the king of carrot flowers part one and little birds, and that the king of carrot flowers is infact this brother of mangums friend. Therefor this verse becomes even more painful when you consider it's based on a true story.

the fourth verse is very hopeful. It suggest that all these characters that are encountered in In the aeroplane over the sea will be reunited with what the want most. The king of carrot flowers wont be judges on his homosexuality and will live happily not in fear of his father. The other part of the siamese twin will be united with Goldaline and they may even find someone who's a brother to them. If she is reunited with goldaline then she wont be alone and someone will finally be there to understand her character, hopes, and dreams, or if you like the things that " sound only at night as [she] Sleeps". Anne Will one day meet mangum and she's already in the afterlife with "her sister and mother and 500 families". Because of the afterlife she will be able to remember Mangum "50 years later" giving the answer to the question that mangum pondered in Oh comely. Maybe the afterlife is in our minds however and this is the sole reason these people live on - I'll explain later.

The 5th verse we encounter the two headed boy again. I believe this is Peter Wessels, and Peter Van Dann (see my previous post) These two peters were both lovers of Anne Frank in love with the two different sides or personalities of Anne Frank. This last verse is very sad Mangum is telling the two-headed boy that although Anne Frank Appeared confused "she is all you could need". "don't hate her when she gets up to leave" This is a particular dark way to end the album in one view. I believe mangum is saying that Anne lives on in our memories, as do the other characters presented in In the aeroplane over the sea, and this acts as there afterlife. However our memories will eventually fade, then less and less people will know about these people. Eventually One Day the sun will go Nova and then everyone would have left, just as Anne will do when nobody remembers her story, and nobody will remembe any of these characters presented. Mangum is simply saying the two-headed boy not to hate Anne and the fact that she will leave, as we all will one day. One day the universe will be a wasteland, no suns, no memories. just empty voids where peoples "bodies once moved but don't move anymore".

Sorry for being so dark, and remember try to enjoy your life as much as it's possible as its a wonderful gift.

"Peter Wessel and Peter Van Dann have grown into one Peter, who is beloved and good, and for whom I long desperately" - Anne Frank

"Oh, Peter Wessel and Peter Van Dann you are one and the same!" - Anne Frank

Doesn't that explain who the two-headed boy is?

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2 Lyrics 12 years ago
As someone mentioned before, mangum introduces this song as being about a family who lived in the 1940's in europe, and he has dreams about one particular member. This family is obviously the franks. After reading anne franks diary I always see this song as being written from the point of view of Peter Wessel, a former lover of anne's before they went into hiding. The two-headed boy I believe is Peter Wessel, and Peter van Dann. "Peter Wessel and Petter Van Dann have grown into one Peter, who is beloved and good, and for whom I long desperately" - Anne Frank.

Since Anne regarded Peter Van Dann as a brother at times, and peter V D And Peter W are the same person, Then I believe the first verse is Peter W talking about Anne's Father. (The only one of the family to survive, and was left with nothing).

The second verse orginally starting with "sister please" (see two-headed boy pt.2 [live at jittery joes]) I believe is peter w singing to Anne. He is speaking on behalf of his two headed companion (peter V D). Explaining That Peter V D did love Anne, although she was sometimes confused about it "how he'd love to find your tounge in his teeth, In a strugle to find secret songs, that you keep wrapped in Boxes so tight sounding only at night as you sleep" Basicly Anne in her diary explains that her inner self is only reveled when she is alone or in her dreams ("sounding only at night as you sleep"), so this is just peter W explaining to anne that peter V D did want to unlock her inner character so he could really love her. (Anne explains in her diary that for peter V D to show any signs of love to her, he must of senced what anne calls her "good side" because nobody could of loved her other side).

The Third verse I believe is Peter W singing to Anne as well. When Anne and Peter W were lovers Anne admits in her diary that she was childish, and after they spent a summer in love Anne explains how peter W had changed, in my view he had grown up and begun to hate Anne's Childish side. Maybe after hearing anne's story he's grown to love her again, this is why this particular verse is the saddest in my eyes. "... and I'll love you for the rest of you're life" abviously Anne is already dead so this is particlary sad. It's almost like a desperate promise, a sudden realisation of love, but it's all far too late.

The fourth verse is interesting. I believe it is Peter W singing to Peter V D "Brother see we are one and the same" this perfectly mirrors a quote from Anne Frank; "Peter Wessel and Peter Van Dann you are one, and the same!". The rest of this verse however is about a friend of jeff mangums, who's brother commited suicied. Like on Holland, 1945. He sings about this person after singing about the franks. However the rest of this verse would also perfectly describe Peter V D demise. according to Anne Franks diary "When the SS abandoned Auschwitz, in Febuary 1945, to escape the advancing russians, they took Peter Vann Dann with them on the winter march to the west; he was never heard from again". these were known as the death marches, and people were forced to march constantly with little supplies, once people became week they were shot, this is likely what happened to peter V D. "And you left with your head filled with flames And you watched as your brains Fell out through your teeth" this explains the sadistic nature of the killing. Again the last part of this verse is desperate because there is no way the two peters could ever meet or get to know each other.

This desperation and hoplessness is stopped by the 5th verse. here Peter W suggest that he (in the form of the two-headed boy) will be reunited with Anne in the afterlife, and death will not get in the way of there love. "and when we break, we'll wait for our miricle God is a place where some holy spectacle lies And when we break, we'll wait for our miracle God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life". The two-headed boy still has a bond because Peter W is still alive and Peter V D is in his thoughts, but when he dies the physical bond will break; "and when we break". However they will become the same again as they will both be in the afterlife (this is the "miricle" that is mentioned), and Anne will be reuinted with both parts of her love. Her love that satisfies her childish side with Peter W, and the love she felt with Peter V D when she was growing more mature and reveling her inner self. This I believe is the "holy spectacle", and the only thing that will make Anne Whole, as she died a very confused character.(remember I believe this is Peter W thoughts shortly after the events of 1945)

The last Verse I believe is Mangum telling the two-headed boy that although Anne was confused "she is all you could need", and the two loves felt between Peter W, and peter V D were both very genuine. The last line really sticks in my mind. "Don't hate her when she gets up to leave" Mangum has stated that he is confused about relgion (when he sings the king of carrot flowers part two live at jittery Joes, for example), so if it all just ends after death, and the two-headed boy is not reunited with Anne, Mangum is telling the two Peters not to hate Anne for this. the word "when" in this last line, makes me think that deep down he believes everything does end, and it gives this remarkable album a terribly sad ending.

I love the way The last two verses contradict each other, summs up mangums confusion about religion, as well as how confused Anne is about life at the time of her death ("can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all")

P.S. This song is very confusing, but this is what I imagine when I listen to it. I'm probably way off.
