To me the speaker is maternal. To keep being the 'golden boy', she is at pains to warn him, he must keep on an (initially unspecified) particular path.
"kissed 'til they were dead" i hear as a ludicrous summary of implicit beliefs or fears about the consequences of incestuous erotic intimacy. That is the "story" about someone who "fell from glory". Those few lines are all that needs to be said to profoundly affect the boy and us, the listeners. |

Ok, FB had an experience in the Carribean, but he's singing to us who haven't. His inspiration or influences are quite different material from the song's meaning. Why would this appearance of the little fish chasing him prompt him to ask "where is my mind"? This is bigger question concerning his influences. I suppose in the world of underwater fish it felt like his mind didn't exist, so lost in the experience, though present due to animals reacting to him, their reactions bearing no reaction to his thoughts.
As for the meaning, I agree with the person here. I would add that this is a philosophical question. The issue of locality is perhaps addressed most directly by Hilary Putnam's famous phrase "meaning ain't in the head" (and, I say, what is the mind if it doesn't have something to do with meaning?). Later, I think Charles Francis probably wasnt actually thinking that, but more something about the artistic creativity, whereby one is lost in imagination (afterall, perhaps remembering and reconstructing the experience of swimming with the fish in the Carribean, which he refers to explicitly anyway) to the extend that one's "mind" could actually be there rather than here. |

of course, in terms of the world's population white is weird, which makes this juxtaposition work extremely well. Is it (white skin/"she") something I think of as normal but is actually weird? Charles' experiences in Puerto Rico would have influenced this lyric, which i like very much. |

"And her head has no room" is the great line for me. "Promised to the night" I interpret in the cold light of day as connected with the phrase "lady of the night" (prostitute), but that's not how I interpret the song. More like about women in general, as potential partners for oneself. |

Dance the manta ray to move like that. Man Ray is an unintented influence. The primary inspiration in the tailed flatfish, in an image viewed from underneath. the flying saucer is just another kind of movement on the same theme, which ends the song.
