Ani tells the truth as she sees it in her songs, she is so honest and I often find myself nodding and thinking I agree I agree. This song is about the life that she lives. You might think you know a person, but you don't, there are more layers and flavours than you'll ever get to see. the best you can do is celebrate the layers and flavours that make you unique, and just assept that there will be many times you will not be understood. My favourite verse is the third verse as well... There have been times when it has made me cry. |

I heard this song for the first time yesterday. And I have been listening to it ever since. It makes me cry every time. This song is so obviously about the grief and pain of losing someone, and because life and friendships can be here one day and gone the next it's something we can all relate to. I'm going through rocky times with my boyfriend, and When I heard this song I thought about him. He's still my boyfriend, but I feel so alone right now. This song also reminds me of my dad who died a few years ago. It's amazing how even after years the pain is still so defined. Turning on this song and just crying is such a release for me. I love the desperation and emotion in Amy's voice. I like that the words actually MEAN something. It's deep and haunting. Evanescence has definitely become one of my favourite bands. |

Okay... First off I am disgusted by the amount of stupid bickering in this thread. Have any of you ever heard the word INTERPRETATION??? interpret the song in whatever way you want to! Did you notice that at the top of the box you typed in it says "What does this song mean to you?" YOU Dammit! If the song means God to you, GREAT! If the song means Satan to you, GREAT! If the song means Friendship to you, GREAT! If it means Love to you, GREAT! If it means Dog Poo to you, GREAT! Stop all the rest of this bullshit. To me the song is about finding that one thing that helps you to feel alive. I relate it to a quest to find myself and find where i belong and what I should be. It's looking for the element that provides the change, be that internally or externally. My favourite lines are "Bid my blood to run / before I come undone / save me from the nothing I've become' |

I have listened to many different versions of this song, and I sing along to all of them. I'm not going to say that one person's version is better than anothers. I like this song for the way that I interpret it. I think the song is about a quest for love, a quest for belonging, and possibly a quest for faith. The world is full of a lot of sadness and pain. As the biblical references will back me up, this is not a new development. Through the sadness and pain people pursue happiness. But what this song is trying to tell you is that love, belonging, faith... They do bring you happiness, but not all the time. You have to know sadness to understand joy. You have to cry to be able to laugh. faith, love, belonging: 'it's not a cry you can hear at night / it's not somebody who's seen the light / it's a cold and it's a broken halleluja." On a quest to find happiness you have to realize and accept the sadness. |
